Mystery plug size
« on: October 03, 2005, 06:16:05 AM »
I have to remove my CB750 plugs. I've always done it with the plug wrench I have in my modern Suzuki GZ250 toolkit, but it is in the shop -because of a leaking gas tank I'm trying to get replaced by Suzuki even when the bike is 4 years old-.

Well, I had a 16 mm plug socket that didn't fit. So I got the bigger (21 mm) socket and it is way too big. People in the shops tell me there are only two standard measures for spark plugs, 16 and 21 (not talking about reach but about wrench side) If so, what is the size of the CB750 spark plug? ? ? ? ?

They are 18mm. Plugs 1, 3, and 4 are OK with a regular deep-well sparkplug socket, but #2 requires either grinding a socket down to fit, or getting a plug wrench from a CB750 (or your Suzuki) toolkit.

Thanks man. After posting I did a google search and found a bunch of online shops with 16, 18 and 21 mm wrenches, so I guessed 18 was the right one. I'll probably buy online, it wil be faster and cheaper that if I have to visit every auto shop. There are not many bike shops around here.

Well I got a plug socket from sears, you probably do not have those though, and it works fine. No grinding or anything. Unless the plug socket you get has really thick walls, it should work fine and not require anything special.

Hi jtb, thanks for your kind offer. I got my Suzuki back from the shop and used the spark plug wrench. I'll try to find one, but probably I will buy a whole toolkit out of eBay or something.

This has confirmed an old saying: "no matter how many tools you have, you will always need one you don't have" And I have 4 toolboxes...

I just picked up an EMGO plug wrench that works great for $4.89 Canadian.  It looks like the same kind that comes in the tool kits, with a removable bar that slides through holes on one end.  On the back it reads:  84-04110 Long type for 12mm spark plugs.

I remember using a plug at one point that was NGK but much smaller than the 18mm.... Maybe it was 16mm or 14mm?

I just make it a point to order all my plugs through http://www.z1enterprises.com/

They have the smaller nut NGK plugs, and I can't find them anywhere else around town.  It makes my job (like when I'm doing a plug chop) a whole lot easier.

I also use a 12mm plug socket with the rubber insert that protects the creamic and grips the plug.
