My directionals do not work after replacing the relay?? Help!!
« on: January 12, 2011, 11:01:20 AM »
Fellow members, still new to the site and am still working my K7 resto project and having electrical problems. Specifically the directional relay(Signal-stat 142) is not allowing the directionals to blink ;). Have replaced with a new one I got from the Corvette boys out in Chi-town but to no avail, still ain't working. Lights work but no blinkin blinkers!! >:( Appreciate any electrical guidance the brothers out there can lend a hand in. Take care and ain't doin much ridin in the 27" of snow and counting we are gettin here in the North East. Thanks and ride safe!

Usually that happens with a mechanical relay when you use aftermarket indicators. There's not enough load to activate the mechanical relay. Go to your local auto parts store and pickup a 3 prong electronic flasher relay, between $8-$15.

same thing is happening to me could be the relay but I have tracked mine down to my left hand conrole is worn out to the point where if I slide it all the way over it stays on no blink  if I put it over say half way it will blink

Even that would probably be fixed by an electronic flasher relay vs mechanical. The later CBs (74 and later?) started wiring an additional ground to the relay location even though the mechanical relays were 2 prong. With the electronic flasher relays, you're no longer relying on the load to activate the relay. I'll try to find the exact part no. or pic and post it here.

FWIW

I got an Electronic Flasher at Advance Auto Parts - about $10. I got the 3-connector type since the one it replaced had 3. Works like a charm. Even used the orig rubber "holder".

*I have also noticed if the battery is low (with engine not running) the turn sigs don't function properly (voltage sensative) - even with an Elec Flasher (and nothing wrong with turn sigs). In such case, charge battery or start the engine and run it up to 2500/3000 rpm and try the turn sigs again.

*A poor ground will cause turn sigs to act goofy - work at times and not work at others. (Been there, too and wired a "Popwood Ground" which fixed problem.)
