Is lining necessary for NOS gas tank - CB350F in question
« on: January 12, 2011, 11:53:30 AM »
I have a NOS Matador Red CB350F tank that I'll be installing in the spring.  This tank has never had fuel in it so I wonder if putting a liner such as the caswell plating, redcoate, or Kreem systems is necessary or desirable before I use it.  I figured that the tanks seem to have lasted 30-40 and now are requiring a liner so maybe just use it as is and worry about in a few decades.

Thanks for the input.

I would only use a liner on a tank that had already suffered from rust.
If your NOS tank has been kept well then it shouldn't need any remedial action or this type.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

I think you should only use liner as a last resort and maybe not even then.

Excellent...just saved myself $150. My NOS K1 tank is in for paint as we speak. I was going to have the radiator shop line it, but was not sure if it was really needed. The inside is pristine...thanks fellas.

Yep, if your tank is minty inside, don't line it, but if it's at all suspect, don't be afraid to use it. I like POR15 and have had excellent results, POR15 is impervious to modern fuel, including ethanol, and if anyone's ever had a big dollar paint job ruined by pin hole leaks like I have, you'll agree that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

I wouldn't recommend Kreem though, I've used it with good results, but it's not a patch (pun intended.....) on POR 15 and some of the other liners out there. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
