Trying to split cases and need some guidance

Hey all,

I got a snow day today, so i figured i am might as well split the cases on my spare/in-the-works bike (a K8 btw).  However, I am stuck!!  The stupid oil cooler adapter plate is in the way!!  Any tips on getting this free (and more importantly, which way I should be trying to loosen it  ;))??

I'd put a big wrench on it and tap it with a hammer. The shock should help break it free. Maybe some penetrant. Though it shouldn't put up much of a fight unless the PO really cranked it down. It's been protected from the elements being inside the filter cover, so it shouldn't have gotten stuck like the filter cover bolts do.

I couldnt even budge it.  I think the PO tightened the ever living crap out it.  I just hope it doesn't break...... Fingers will be crossed.....

Too bad. It doesn't need that much tightness, learn the lesson.

Time for some penetrant. If its like the cover bolt, the stick occurs betwen the seat of the bolt and the surface it seats on, not the threads. WD-40 is the least effective, PB Blaster better, 50/50 acetone/ATF is best by far.

Heat/cold/heat will sometimes break the stuckness. Love my heat gun for such purposes.

I have found that the acetone/atf method has mixed results. it's good for somethings but not all.

This however, has never failed me.

Thanks gnarly.  So I have a question for the pros, what is this?  It fell out of one of my cases.  It is magnetic, but I can't tell where it came from or what it could possible be :(

Look over your transmission . If I were to guess (all I can do from here) I'd say shift fork .

I was thinking shift fork too but I feel like there should be more pieces than just that.
It's got that beveled edge and the curvature seems to be about right but... yea there should definitely be more pieces.
Also, I don't know if it's thick enough to be a fork...

You sure it's not a chunk of the case?
Look around the gears and oil pump, maybe something slipped and made contact.

Being that its magnetic can't be a part of the case itself. I'd vote for the shift fork. But if they are intact, has the engine been into before? Maybe shrapnel from a PO problem that wasn't cleaned out.

Thanks guys.  I took a quick look at the forks and they seemed to be find, but i have not fully removed them to inspect.  I will hopefully get a chance this weekend.

MC - i am pretty sure this engine has been split before.  A lot of the screws were a little chewed and it looked like there had been some damage on the top end before so it could be some left over debris i guess.
