1975 CB750 Cafe project
« on: January 09, 2011, 08:12:22 PM »
So this is not my first attempt at getting a bike running from not, but this is the most involved project I've ever gone as far as completely tear down the engine, cutting up the frame, etc. So I'll try not to bore you all with the slow pace of the project but I've used this forum a lot for the little amount of progress I've made so far. I don't have a lot of time on my hands being a full time engineering student, nor do I have a garage to work in when I'm up at school. When I'm at my parents house I take over their garage so thats where I get a majority of my work done.

So the bike I traded straight for a rifle I had sitting in my gunsafe collecting dust. It has an unknown amount of miles, when I picked it up the guy already had the engine pulled out, and head taken off. I can tell the bike has had a lot of abuse and multiple people butchered up the wiring. Anyway less talk more pictures:

Here it is the day I picked it up:

Most of it under my bed:

Removing studs:

So I plan on using an AGM battery and hiding the battery and electronics, but now I need to decide whether or not I want to use the stock oil tank or a slick looking one from bung king or something. I don’t trust my welding skills.... Also does anyone know what the wear limit is on the connecting rods where the wrist pin goes? I don’t  know if I should replace them or just stick with the old ones.
Thanks for looking!
Overpriced? Oh ya. Practical? Hell no. Street legal? Probably not. Time consuming? Perhaps. Worth it? Absolutely.

In the bottom left corner there is the additional options link. Hit that to open up an attachment box.

There is an easier way, when you have uploaded your pics to photobucket , put your cursor on  the pic that you want to post you will get a drop down box appear,go to the bottom option which is the "IMG code" and click on it and it copies the link, then go to your post and "paste" the link, easy as that....Preview your post to see the pic..

Try #2 with the photos:

So this is my first attempt rebuilding an engine this complex, any tips, criticism or help is welcome!

Removing the studs. This method worked for all but one.

And the result: snapped stud. Tried the welding trick but kept snapping the welds. I just took it to the machine shop and have a pro get it out.

Connecting rod. Does anyone know if there is a wear limit where the wrist pin goes? I don't know If I need to replace the connecting rods, have them machined or just put new bearings in the bottom (where the connecting rod connects to the crankshaft) and call it a day? anyhelp in this department would help!

Frame cleaned up:

So as of right now I'm waiting to get the case back from the machine shop, in the meantime ive been working on making my own fiberglass seat, also the front suspension needs new fork tubes. Ill have to order new ones from cyclex. Possibly get them an inch shorter for a sleeker look??? More pix to come.
