Stripped oil filter housing bolt
« on: April 29, 2005, 11:15:30 PM »
I am out of ideas to remove this bolt...ratchet set, wrenches and vise grips have all failed...any thoughts or words of wisdom?

And if I DO happen to get it off, any help on where I can get a replacement? Or what I can put in its place?

Thanks in advance!

I had one strip. I managed to get it off with a pipe wrench. Yes thats right a pipe wrench. Unlike vise grips a pipe wrench will increase tension on the bolt when you increase torque on the handle. Thier designed to grip round metal things and screw/unscrew them

Recommend a small one not a big one like for the kitchen sink.

After you get it out the best way to fix them is to grind or machine the old head until a new nut will fit over it. Then weld the new nut in place to the old one. Done properly you really can't see the repair.

If you don't want to have it happen again, or if your lazy (like me) and don't want to grind much, use a bigger nut.

Replacement? See FAQ for list of distributors. Even your friendly local Honda dealer should have 'em.

Grinding the head of the bolt off is quick and easy, and will ensure that you will obtain a new bolt.

Contact Terry in OZ and convert to a spin on oil filter.  His adapter plate is first rate workmanship and oil changes are a snap.

does the spin on adaptor also fit a 74 cb750? They do look alike.

EMGO makes a replacement - should cost about US$12 new tops.  They have a much larger nut.  Apparantly, the reason Honda made it with a small head in the first place was to reduce the likely hood of them getting over-torqued into the engine case.

You might have to grind off the end of the bolt.  Then slide off the housing and go to town on the shaft.

Or, you could just take a reciprocating saw and cut right through the housing, filter and bolt  ;D  I suppose that's worst-case scenario.

I'm in the exact same boat right now.  My bike is in the shop for other reasons, and they're going to try the bolt, but I'm not holding my breath.  I did the pipe wrench bit etc. and no luck.  I may be taking my dremel tool to the bolt end to see if I can surgically remove the flange so the housing will slide off without damaging the housing itself.

I have to agree with "sidematic" on this one. Contact Terry in OZ and see about getting one of his adapter plates. They are awesome, and he'll even supply a list of spin-on filters you can use.

Cheers,
Lou.

Saw a notch in the head of the bolt and use an impact screwdriver.

Just get a cheap socket a size smaller, whack it on with a hammer and trun the bolt off. The same thing works for car wheel locks.

The 12mm ones suck. But there are several different lengths when you replace it. I have seen either an 11mm or an SAE socket hammered on but a grinder works. Just take your time so you don't clog the wheel. A 1/16 inch cutoff wheel works best.

I bought a set of sockets made by Irwin that are designed for bolts with rounded heads.  Got them at Home Depot, and use them all the time on the rusted bolts on my project '72 750.  Those sockets plus an impact driver are the way to go.
