Topic: Ignition switch

I'm new here and this is my first post so hello everyone. I believe sometime before I bought my '75 cb550 someone changed the position of the ignition switch from under the fuel tank to the top of the forks (next to the turn, high beam, oil, and neutral lights)...I don't like this. I would like to change it back to it's original position, but the bracket under the tank is not there anymore. I've searched the internet for the bracket (that's just what I'm calling it, correct me if I'm wrong) but I cant find anything.

I am sure you could take a reg-old piece of metal and make whatever bracket you want.
All it would be is a piece of metal with a hole larger enough to slide the ign. set thru, then it gets "backed-up" by a nut on the backside
of the switch. Paint it black , and call it a day...

The Previous Owner (PO) of my bike did the same thing with the switch, and I couldn't stand the look of it. I moved mine to the left sidecover of the bike. Just made a small bracket, and used lots of zip-ties to insure it won't go anywhere..

There's usually one to be had on eBay. I'm not sure but I would imagine that those bracketsare pretty genaric between models, maybe someone will confirm that. Also look at Parts for Sale in this board, there's some bikes being parted out. I'll bet somebody has one. Oh..BTW..Welcome to the board. If you're here to learn more about your ride you've come to the right place!

Had the same problem with my 75. Took the bracket you have, bent a 90 degree angle, and mounted it in the original holes under the tank. As soon as I did that, I found one on ebay for $8. PS, don't burn your fingers shutting it off!

Same situation on my bike when I got it. I made up a bracket from a piece of aluminum bar stock and a bolt. (I still have it around here somewhere...) They turn up on eBay now and then (how I eventually got mine)  so if you are patient one will come your way. As also stated, you could put a want ad on the site and look that way.

Same here.......I spent half the day yesterday looking around in 3 different bike graveyards for one. None to be found. The stock mount actually clamps around the frame tube with one bolt holding it.

Ideally, the mount you have now should be on the other side of your handlebar mount. Thats the way mine was but it was rusty so I took it off and made one out of aluminum that puts it about where yours is. But instead of using the bolts on one side of the handlebar clamp I used the bottom ones.

As soon as I can find a stock one I'll do the change. I'm also looking for the flip up cover for the switch also.

Thanks for all the info everybody! Grumburg, I never even thought about burning my fingers! This is my second bike and I plan to do a few modifications on it to get a real nice cafe racer look. I'm sure I will find some good advice here.

You will have to get a used one as that bracket has been obsoleted. Very occasionaly you will find someone with a NOS one part number is 50375-323-020 and its a 500 or 550 part only. Also usually the wiring has to be extended to move the switch up to the bars so it will need to be shortened again.

The switch on my CB7580k5 is up on the handlebars, just assumed that where it should be, was it originally mounted under the tank?

Not to hijack the thread but to keep from posting a new topic, my switch appears to be new, and the way it was wired up was.

Red from bike to red on switch- 12volt constant

Black from switch to black on bike and also tied into brown from bike-ignition and also powers headlight/tailight.

Brown/white from switch and brown from switch were not used.

Brown/white on bike was not used and it appears to go to the two front turn signal lenses.

IIRC, the brown from the switch had power when turned to the extreme right, and the brown/white from the switch had did not have power but was linked to the brown wire when in ignition but not to the extreme right.

I'm confused, as from the schematics, when the switch is turned to the extrememe right it should just illuminate the taillights, but am I wrong on this?  I wired it back up the way it originally was, but soldered and heat shrinked the connections, as I could see me turning it the wrong way, leaving my lights on and forgetting about them.
