Has anyone ever tried...?
« on: January 14, 2011, 01:57:52 PM »
I have been riding my bike for a while now with a very open exhaust... And it has gotten OLD! I have resorted to ear plus to save the hearing... Been trying to find a suitable muffler online, but those things are spendy! And thats when it occured to me... Motorcycle mufflers are basically glasspacks. So I started looking at glasspack mufflers. I found a 12 incher with 2 1/2 in inlet and outlet... I figure get that and go to a muffler shop with the bike and have a pipe bent to attach it to the header. At the least I think it'll quiet it down. And once that glass pack is painted black to match the header, it'd be hard to tell what it was... I figure $60 total. Just curious if I am blazing new trails, or following some other fools path. Please refrain from telling me how retarded I am if this is in fact a retarded idea. Looking for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism...

My concern is that there would not be enough flow to actually dampen sound. Possibley go for one with a smaller ID?

I checked the Summit Racing website. They do make a 2" in/2" out model for about $35.00. What the hell, it just may work.

Go for it!!!

Nice, I would like something with a smaller outlet, to slow things down a bit, I'll look @ summit. I think the added lengh of header and SOMETHING at least TRYING to muffle it should help.

From experience with small displacement vehicles, a large exhaust gives the vehicle that "pissed off bumblebee" sound. A smaller pipe keeps the pressure up, therefore making the shound deeper.

In the end, it is your bike and you do what you want, but I would go with 2" over 2 1/2".

Yes you can do it, but you will need to spend allot of time getting it to run right. I found that after you get the carb  dialed in you still have a loss in power.

you could look around for a used supertrapp... or even a new one is only like $140. theres a couple guys on here that made simple mufflers out of exhaust tips for fairly cheap...

That car muffler (we call 'em "Hot Dogs" here in Oz) will work, but won't quiet it down much. You'd be better off buying some baffle tube of the correct dia (I haven't seen your bike, so I don't know what you're doing) and some fibreglass mat to wrap it with, and make yourself up an end cap to hold it all in. It'll quieten your bike down, and give you some valve saving back pressure, and probably a bit more low down power. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Straightthrough mufflers are loud, period. Quiet mufflers have several baffles in them so the noise pulses get "confused" and can't find their way out...

And I was thinking, as far as baffling it... Why not take a flat washer that fits inside the end of the glass pack with say a 1 3/4-2 in ID and weld it in the end? Maybe one @ either end? That should do it... Now I have to call the muffler shop and see if they will even do it! And ask the fiance for the $$$.

A number of guys in the Harley camp are putting Cherry Bombs on their bikes:

In their case, the point is not to paint them but make a statement about what you're using while standing still.

They have an extremely free flowing exhaust setup and glasspack models. I also don't think you'd get much quieter with one since their motto is "Disturbing the peace since 1968."

From the few bikes I've heard with them, they were quite loud but tone and sound were all over the map, no two sounding the same. But, they do look cool .
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

That's nearly identical to what I am running.  I will be interested to see what you end up with.  Be aware that those cherry bombs are surprisingly HEAVY.

The one I have in mind weighs 4 lbs... I figure thats got to be as light or lighter than most sportbike mufflers...

VG, The sweep of your' headers look very like Yosh hand bents. if there's any ID ( it would probly be a stamp at collector end) don't molest.... even if not, I'd shop E bay for a Kerker meg. by either installing a sleeve, or expanding it's throat, you'd be able to add a good looking can, & depending on which baffle you use, could  tune your' DB's from stock to "boisterous". luck g

This muffler is stamped Harley Davidson 65538-95A for HD flt model (certified 80 decible) and fits right on the Honda factory header with a chrome clamp. It has three factory welded nuts along the back for easy rear support to the rear foot peg. Real solid and sounds very similar to stock Honda CB. This is a 1981 CB 650 standard with 4-2 exhaust.

CRC2 in Indianapolis, and eBay sellers, have an Emgo "shorty" muffler that is small, light, and best of all, chrome.  It has a removeable straight through baffle that could be easily modified for more quiet, and more back pressure.  A single reverse cone or dunstall copy would also work and all of these can be had for under $50.00.  Check ebay for a megaphone style that would slip right on and have an inexpensive and readily available aftermarket baffle.  Cherry Bombs are very heavy as was stated before.  Fabrication required for at least one HD mounting point.  Enjoy, I seldom spend over $100 for a complete exhaust system.

King, I checked ebay and found something that looks like a chrome plated glass pack... As I said earlier, the one I am looking @ only weighs 4lbs. And whatever I get I plan on painting black anyways. I think I can figure out how to make this work well...

I'm with Terry sort of, rather stick something in the end of what you have than hang a big honker on the end. Search "exhaust baffle" and find things like this: http://www.raskcycle.com/cgi-bin/cart.pl?db=british.dat&category=Exhaust+Baffles  They may need to be shimmed or have an end cap washer type thing welded on. But I'd bet it would affect performance less, sound more, and be way cheaper. But I'm just glad you are doing something to quiet it down.

I've sponsored a thread on tinnitus (chronic ringing in the ears) and its not worth whatever joy one gets from the noise believe me, as I sit here wishing the phone would stop ringing, someday, somehow.   :'(

I made some mufflers with a stainless tip and a 12" car glass pack insert for the F model header, I love the sound. I think it's the sweetest sounding 750 I've ever owned. I've posted pics here before but am having trouble copying the img code right now.
