engine paint
« on: December 17, 2006, 01:54:07 AM »
Just a thought - does everyone paint the main engine casing when doing an engine refurb, and if so, why? Is it because it's the 'original' finish, or because it's plain easier. Is it that they are a different grade of ali that looks horrible if blasted?

I'm probably going to get the heads/barrels vapour blasted, and wonder why the rest of the crankcases couldn't be. Just wondered if there's a good reason.

Hi Phil
On my CB750 I painted the crankcases because I wanted an original finish, to do this I had to clean off all the old paint and oxidisation, this was quite a job, wouldn't really like to try and clean it regularly if I had left it bare. The paint is not only there to look pretty it is an anti corrosion measure.
Depends really on what pleases you, if you are going to paint or leave it bare you have to clean it off throroughly any way, if after you have cleaned it you like the look then leave it bare, maybe go for a paint/bare finish, paint the out of the way places and leave the bits you can see (and get at to clean) bare. Whatever looks good to you.

Cheers

Is there any paint recommended? I am currently planning on a flat black/red color scheme (when I get to that point), and was thinking the engine would look nice and be even easier to keep clean if it is black.

This subject has been hit a number of times > here's one link [of many]: http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=15628.0
There are a number of very close matches to the OEM finish. I used the Duplicolor high temp engine paint on my restoration. You don't need to paint if engine finish is in good condition, but in my case, the head had been bead-blasted when overhauled, so it needed something. If it's just plain cosmetics, think about what your project will look like when complete with or without a freshened engine finish.

Hello pae,

Try reading over and checking the pics on this link.  He has many things worth reading there; one of the subjects is about engine paint and certain paint's resistance to heat.  All of it is a good read.......... give all the pictures a chance to load......

I have a 1978 CB750F and I plan to repaint the motor using PJ1 black motor paint..  I realize this is a dumb question, but what's the best cleaner to remove oil / grease and to prepare the motor for painting?  I have laquer thinner that will probably do most, but wanted to see if anyone had a better idea..  Thanks all...

I've used spray gasket remover, aircraft paint remover, and abrasives for paint removal. the juggs and head were until recently black. I used grill spraypaint which worked very well. For a detail I sanded the black off the outer edges of the fins and shot them with hi temp clear. This time  I'm  going with hi temp flat white on the upper engine and aluminium and clear hi temp on the lower. side covers and dyno will be polished and clear coated. IMO its easier to clean the lower case when there its a painted surface.

Hymodyne, an Alto, it's a Martin Handcraft, 1936 vintage. Ergonomically it's not anywhere near as good as a modern instrument, but I love the tone. If I bought a new instrument then the moment I walk out the shop it'd be the same as everyone else's. There's something about owning a real vintage one - in many ways it can't be justified compared to the 'playability' of modern ones, but there's that indefinable sentimental value that  you can not replace. Bit like an early Honda, I guess... :D  :D
