CL350 Backfiring Out Both Ends
« on: April 07, 2011, 10:43:59 AM »
Hey guys, first post here...

Just finished a top end rebuild on my '72 CL350 last week.  Ran good for the first couple of rides, but now it's backfiring exhaust through both carburetors (and occasionally thru the exhaust).  I've checked valve clearances and ignition timing and cleaned up the points without any luck.  Any ideas on what this could be?

Thanks in advance!

A little more info here...  the rebuild included all gaskets from the base gasket up, plus rings and chain tensioner assembly (used the small Cappellini steel wheel in place of the original rubber one) and a general cleaning.

Backfiring through the carbs is a symptom of incorrect valve timing. My hunch is that either you didn't get the cam timing right during assembly, or your Cappellini gizmo isn't getting the job done.
