How to stick the grips to the bars?
« on: March 27, 2006, 12:17:11 PM »
Quick question....have new grips and want to make sure they are on the bars nice and tight....what does everyone use for new grips? I seem to recall hairspray was good...anyone use this or have other clever ideas?
Cheers

I scuffed up the area on the bars where the grips cover with some 500 grit sand paper, then doused the insides of the grips with WD40.  They slid right on and the next day the WD40 had evaporated and they dont budge!  Others use water, sometimes soapy water as a lube.

They actually do sell "Grip-Glue". I got some direct from Honda.
Stuff had a smell like burned gear fluid (nasty) , but did the trick...

I tried the soap and water trick....went on real nice....but over time I noticed my grips started to twist.....a friend suggested "Pro-Grip" from Dennis Kirk....that did the trick.....and its on sale for only 3.00/tube right now....hope this helped

Safety wire is easily removed and trick when installed right.  Most new grips have two recessed grooves for wire to fit in.  You can purchase some fine wire and and safety wire pliers, or just use some regular pliers.  The trick is to not use wire that is so thin it will cut through the grips or so thick it that it protrudes past the rubber.

Also you don't want to twist the wire incredibly tight either.  Here's the lo-tech method:  make one wrap around the grip with plenty of extra on the underside of the bar.  Use some pliers and twist until it starts to compress the grip.  Make this twist out of the way on the bottom of the bar.  Cut off the excess and push the wire ends back into the grip.  You may have to try a couple times to get the method down.  Diagonal cutters work well to cut the wire off once wrapped.

You can do this on the throttle sleeve with no problem, provided you dont totally reef on it.

Hair Spray.  shoot some in the grips, slide on the bars.  It will get nice and sticky.   Always works for me.

I second the aerosol paint trick. Any old can will do. Just spray some in the grip, slide it on, and it drys within a day. And the price can't be beat.

I've been told by a pro that belt dressing (car stuff) works the best, but I always use spray paint. Give it a good douse and swing the excess- put it on right away. Just watch where you're swinging.

i don't use anything, and i've never had mine slip. just breathe heavily (no, not naughty) into the inside of the grip to cover the inner surface with condensation. this will allow it to slide on easily, but is a #$%*ing pain to get back off (read: sticky enough).

Hair Spray.  shoot some in the grips, slide on the bars.  It will get nice and sticky.   Always works for me.

I've always used hair spray on my bikes (since I was a kid). Never had a problem with it. On my old Nighthawk, a PO had used someother kind of adhesive that borke down over a little bit of time (before the actual grips did) and it started to loose it's adhesion. When riding down the road, I would have to keep a Death Grip on the throttle just to keep it from slipping down on me. Took it off, hairsprayed it, never moved again.

Back in my BMX days we used gasoline. It would make the grips kind of gooey and you'd slide them on the bars. Once the gas evaporated, they were stuck to the bars for life.
