CB550 Cam Cover Installation Question
« on: January 19, 2011, 09:14:59 AM »
OK, before I screw something up I need some help. I have replaced the 6 sealing rubbers below the cam cover and installed a new cam cover o ring. I am now trying to line up the cam cover to secure with the bolts. Is there a trick to this as it seems to not line up correctly? I know in the manual they caution about watching how the rocker arm tappet adjusters contact the valve ends and to reach thru the openings and pull up on the rockers arms to align properly. Also what about lining up the gear for the tachometer? Could that be an issue?  Does the cam need to be in a certain position?  I am afraid to just start tightening bolts, I don't want to bend a valve or have the tachometer gear not line up. (I will be compressing a few valves as I begin to tighten the bolts, right?) What is the trick to reinstalling this cover?  Any feedback from someone who has done this succesfully would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! I know some of you guys are mammoth knowledge about these bikes and is why I love this forum!

ok something i can answer

remove your tach gear take it right out install it after the cover is down.

remove the tapit covers all 8 of them.

go to your kitchen or where ever you keep your elastic bands get 4 of them or more if you shoot one across the room the first couple times.

then put an elastic from one exhaust tapet "probably will have to put it under the tapet" to your intake tapet. up and over the top not inside do all 4. then place the cover on bolt it down hold the elastic so it doesn't shoot inside the motor cut them and remove. she your tapet clearance with your fealer guages and then put in your tach gear.

That photograph, all by itself, deserves a prized position in one of the Tips and Tricks Forum categories.  Outstanding!

The rubber band thing is awesome.

I just find the tappet that is stuck, and gently lift it, then move to the next stuck one until the cover is on.
