Fairing Clearance Against Alternator Cover
« on: January 17, 2011, 08:37:13 AM »
For those that are running full fairings, how much clearance do you have between the fairing and the alternator cover?  My fairing just touches the lower part of the cover.  I can space it out but it is already out there.  Should there be some gap or is it ok to touch the cover?

Thanks
Scott

I guess the true CR would have a narrower alternator, so that would fix it.   :D

I've seen others where a hole is cut in the fairing to allow the alternator cover to poke through about an inch or so. Otherwise its going to look like its not fitting.

CycleX has a teeny exposed one.  He wants $450 for it too.

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Scott, is this the Dunstall fairing that you posted at the bottom of this page. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=81403.msg916379#msg916379
If so it should fit with the big alternator cover as it was just an after market product for a road bike.

Yes, Dunstall fairing for a road bike.  Not looking for a different alternator solution.  Its supposed to stick out like it does.  I know some of you are running full fairings.  How close is your alternator cover to the fiberglass and have you experienced any problems with heat?
Thanks
Scott

The fairing on the CR in my avatar rubbed on the genny cover when it ran with the stock motor.
I put a thin peice of rubber where it touched to stop it wearing through the glass untill we got the factory CR cover.
If you can't make your's clear with the brackets, just do as I did, no one will see it.

Scott, if you're bothered about heat, get down to your local hardware store and buy a plumbers soldering mat - should be able to get about a 12" square mat made of ceramic material. I then use fibreglass resin to stick that to the inside of the fairing. The mat is used by plumbers to blowtorch solder heating joints without burning the wall/floor behind the mat and it works great in fairings to stop heat transfer from the engine and paint discolouration. Should only cost a couple of dollars too! ;D
