Homemade Mid Controls for CB750 - w/ PICS
« on: January 21, 2011, 11:17:44 AM »
Hey, everyone.  This is one of my first posts, but I've been a lurker here for some time, getting ideas for a project I'm working on for a friend of mine.  It was good running, but asthetically mediocre, near-stock 1976 CB750K (except exhaust and seat) that we decided to cafe.  I'll get some other, more general, project pics up later, but wanted to share a simple modification I've made this week.

I always thought the stock pegs were ugly and heavy, but the bike owner wanted to keep the stock peg location.  I thought I could improve on the stock pegs, so I began by making a cardboard template for a pair of footpeg support plates on the bike, and transfering that to some 3/8" aluminum.  Those arcs follow the contour of thelower frame rails, and those tabs fit the anti-rotation nubs that are welded to the frame.

Then cut them out on a band saw, and drilled the mounting stud holes.

Added some ideas for 'speed holes' and footpeg support location.

Then got to drilling...

The standoffs were also just notched on the bandsaw, then drilled & tapped on the rear, and drilled for peg mounting bolts.  I used 3/8 x 16 bolts for both the peg hinge and standoff ounts.  I would have liked to have used metric fasteners, but they're hard to find at the local hardware stores.  The rear of the mounting plates have since been drileld with a countersink bit to allow the bolt heads to sit flush.  This is especially important on the right side, as the oil line passed right across this area, and I didn't want any possible abrasions to it in the future.  The pegs were purchased of ebay for like $4 + $2 shipping.  No bad, and the knurled chrome matches the stock brake pedal quite well.

Here are some shots of them mounted.  I still need to sand & lightly polish them, but i wanted to share this with the forum.  I've learned a lot on here, and wanted to hopefully give some others ideas in return.  Thanks, everyone.

Before & After:

Rider View.  Yes, the right peg is further forward than the left.  This is how the stock pegs are positioned as well.  I thought about evening it out, by placing the right peg farther rearward, but realized the stock placement is to allow more toe clearance during kick starting.  Since this bike is currently kick-only, I left it where is was, within about 1/4" from the stock location:

Hey, CycleRanger, we're here in the ATX too.  Actually, I'm SW of town and the bike owner lives in San Marcos, but we're close.

The blocks that the pegs are mounted to would look good with holes drilled threw them. Nice idea keep up the good work. If a guy had a bridge port he could make anything for bikes.

The mounting bolt from the rear penetrates about 3/4 of the way through that square stock, so there would be no way of me to dill holes straight through it.  I wanted to be sure there was plenty of thread engagement so it didn't strip the aluminum threads I tapped.  I've thought about added some round divots to them, but didn't want to weaken the 7/8" square stock.  I'm sure it would be fine, though.  It may also look too 'busy' with those features added.

No Bridgeport used here.  This was all done with pretty basic tools.

-bandsaw
-drill press
-vertical belt sander
-hand files to tweak them after a test fit.

It could have all been done with only a band saw, hand drill, and hand sanding / filing, if your access to equipment is more limited than mine.

Today I added chamfered edges to all the holes and got those mounting bolts countersunk.  I'll try to get some higher resolution pics of the installation posted soon rather than those crappy cell phone shots.

The only basic thing I see is that list are files.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

By 'basic' I meant nothing like a lathe or millling machine was used to produce these.  As a result, they're not perfect, but i wanted to show what's possible with some 'basic' tools.  Also, while not everyone has access to a band saw, almost anyone with any amount of tools will have a hand drill, sandpaper, and files.  You can often find used shop tools, like the others listed in my previous post, on Craigslist for under $100.

Correct.  The pegs are designed to fit most modern sport bikes, and the knurled surface is rotated, offset, and angled upward compared to the pivot pin, so it's hard to get them to sit parallel to the ground.  Its hard to explain.  I may spend some more time doing some hand filing on the tabs of the standoff shafts to allow the pegs to rotate down and 'sag' more under rider weight.  That may allow me to swap sides and have them foldable in a more traditional manner.  I also plan to place an arced spring washer between the peg and the mounting shaft to add some friction and prevent the pedals from rattling.

You are correct about the basic tools.. anyone with a hackdaw, files drill, & sandpaper, and Desire.. should be able to build that.

Do you have access to a lathe? You may be able to make washers(Uhmw or delrin) to tension the pegs a bit.

No lathe access, but I was just going to use something like these, as are used on my Harleys.

or

These should do the trick.

Prolly shoulda put a  ;D behind that.  They peg setup does look good.  I guess I was thinking basic like 754 said.

I haveta go look at mine to see that the right peg is forward a bit.  What is funny, now that I think about it, my feet always felt funny on them.
