Rain-x on your helmet
« on: February 02, 2011, 11:14:56 AM »
After a fairly frightning ride in the rain at night, I started wondering how well Rain-X might work to keep your vision clear (not talking about fogging but the blurring from lights mixed with water on the outside). I know the sheild on my helmet has seen better days but I still keep it clean.

I used Rain-x on my moms car a long time ago and I remember being very impressed with it. On a helmet though I can see how it might slightly "fog" your vision so I wanted to hear if anyone else had tried this (i tried some search's and didnt find anything).

What do you guyes think?

Don't think that's a good idea.  It may react adversly with the plastic according to the Rain-X label.  Try it on an old broken sheild & see what happens.  Rain-x directions even say to keep it away from the paint!

Rain-X has alcohol in it.  Not good for Lexan (polycarbonate).  It might do okay once, but repeated use will cause small cracks.

Great stuff, though.  Use it on the car religiously.

Use soap on your visor. But first try it on the bathroom mirror - rub it in until it disappears...then go have a shower and steam up the whole room - hey presto the mirror is not fogged up and is still clear...same thing works on your visor.

Good luck

Interesting solution, Andy. Do you have to redo every time you ride in the rain?...Larry

There are plastic aircraft windshield cleaners on the market that also shed water, I used to work for an aviation company, I don't remember what brand we used, but Google popped up a bunch of them, safe for plastics. We used them on the old Bell 42-g "bubble" helicopters.

No. Just every now and then.

I used it on a Shoie shield for 5 years with no damage. The wife dropped my helmet in there somewhere and I replaced the scratched shield, but still... the rain-X didn't hurt the plastic in several years of regular use. It's amazing in rain, you get no vision problem at all. Occasionally I would turn my head to the side to blow off any stubborn drops but mostly they just whiz away before you even notice them.

RainX works but does seem to give big bright rainbow halos at night. I found oncoming car lights blinding using the stuff. Daytime is OK though.
