I checked on the title situation with that elky, but it looks like since its never been registered in texas, that I couldnt get it in my name, even bonded. this is what the DMV told me when I was there to get a copy of my title.

I am going to check into it some more and see what happens. If I can get it for close to 1k I think Ill be happy. My old ladies old lady told me she has a guy that can drop in a replacement engine for around $400.

Funny story related to this.
I sold my car. A little lower than if I had more time, but sold it to a guy. He drove 300 miles to get it. He test drives it and I am completely honest with him on things that are wrong with it (minor all).

He drives it all the way back home then says he has reconsidered because insurance was going to be high. He wants to know if he can have his money back. I told him no. I felt kind of bad but no telling whats been going on with the car in the two days and several hundred miles hes had it...

If he had claimed that the car, after 2 days and 300 miles of test driving, wasn't what you claimed, it would be one thing. However, if his reason for wanting you to take the car back was that his insurance was going to cost more, well, tough titty said the kitty! ;)

I have considered it. It would be easier than a truck to get the bike in and out of. I think I would rather have a truck than a van though.

I wouldnt say no to it. I need something with relatively good gas mileage. Once a year I need to get to midland ~400 miles

Looks like I picked a great time to want an El Camino though.  ::) ::) People want too much for rusted out non running junkers and its hard to convince someone that a non professional engine rebuild doesnt add very much to the value of a car.

I posted my own ads on CL looking for one. But its getting to where I need something soon. It was around 13 degrees with windchill today. I couldnt find my neck gaiter and felt like someone was stabbing me in the neck. If I wasnt a man I might have cried a little.

I had an 81 F100 and an 82 GMC 4x4 shortbed in highschool. and I just found a 2WD 82 chevy in my price range.

There are also a few early 90s blazers around. I wonder if my bike will fit into the back of one? Anyone know?

Yeah, I can dig it but:

-you can haul a bunch of crap in there, covered and secure.
-Easy to get said crap in and out
-good on snow (for those of us who live in snowy states)
-better gas mileage than a truck a lot of the time, esp with newer models
-practical if you got kids

When I used to work at a car rental place people would always be really disappointed when all we had left were minivans, but they are actually really good options for many reasons and drove a lot better than a lot of the SUVs we had IMO.

that yellow van cost 100bucks has a 250 six three spd std column shift and gets 25 on the highway if you drive it nice.  Cheap to fix and almost disposable

I have done it in a Blazer suv, in pieces though :D :D. Had to take the wheels off and it was a mini bike.(400four) ;D. A good El Camino at a good price would be hard to find around here. Your should be able to get an early 90s pick up in your price range...Larry

there are a few vans like that around here but still around 2k. If I came across anything that cheap that runs I would take it.

I might have another good lead on an el camino. My GFs mom is investigating at the moment. recently rebuilt engine and paint both done professionally. If not there is a decent runner 2 hours away for 1500 that needs some work but should be able to get here. Weather is #$%* at the moment though. not conducive for driving anywhere. Mainly because of power outages. Roads are clear.

I've had a lot of experience w/ El C's, they're great. My uncle had a 68 that went 200k miles for him. A friend bought a 74, similar to the woody above. He cut the front 18" off of it (there is nothing useful there) and added a expanded metal grill w/ lights and a 4 x 3 metal channel bumper. He put some truck axle w/ a highway gear on the back and took an inch or 2 off the bed side of each wheel well so a 4' wide sheet of plywood would fit. What a great truck! Chevy should have made these changes. Get a 350 automatic. Practically in destructable, they made gillions of them, any garage can work on them and parts are everywhere.

About 20 years ago I looked at a 69 Super Sport. BONE STOCK it had a 396 w/ a highrise manifold, HUGE Holley carb and headers w/ dual exhaust, a four speed with Hurst shifter and bucket seats. That things would haul a**, couldn't stop or turn but yeehaw it would go. It was April 14th and cost exactly what I owed Uncle Sam. Paid my taxes instead of buying it and have regretted it ever since.

They are way cool.

thanks for that. I am over on the el camino forums and they all feel the same way. My family is trying to get me to get something newer, but thats no fun. Besides the newer vehicles in my price range are in just as bad of shape or not big enough for the bike to fit into. There is a 95 Tahoe around but it probably needs a new engine. Most of the trucks are being sold as "work trucks" so they are really run into the ground, regardless of year.

Im making a few phone calls a day but no luck yet.

So I got a line on one that is owned by the Texas Moderator of the El Camino Forums. His son drove it until he got something else. Its been sitting for a while, but hes stored it properly. Its a bit ugly but at $1000 I cant complain. Still waiting to hear back with him with more pictures. Needs a few things obviously but hopefully I can find them at local junk yards.

There are a couple more in the area but they want way too much money for their junkers. I feel better about this one since a mechanic has owned it. but we will see.

Always thought it'd be cool to have one of those here in Canada maybe I should buy it and fix it up NOT! probably be cheaper to get one of these.  Pretty much a left hand drive Monaro with a Chevy drivetrain if I'm not mistaken... actually upsets me that GM couldn't have been bothered to come out with an original design

When I was 15 and realized it was going to be time to save and buy a car soon, I had an autotrader type mag that had a bunch of australian cars in it. There was like a 75 Ford Falcon Australian in it for like $2000 plus shipping of like 500. it was Just the frame and drive train but I really wanted it. My stepdad said that was ridiculous so I thought I would get a Nova. He is hispanic and told me that it was a joke when he was in school because Nova means "doesnt go." I wanted to impress him so I got an 82 F100. I was about 30% done restoring it when someone ran a red light and totalled it. I had put in a 94 bench seat, replaced or restored all the interior and was onto the front end. Still makes me sad to think about. Since then I have had like 5 vehicles. I'd buy them for real cheap and drive them for about a year and then sell them for a small profit. Easier to do with trucks. I lost like 4 grand on my aveo. So I think I am done buy compact cars for the foreseeable future. Not really any fun to work on anyway.

So I guess I am hoping to spend some money and time on an el camino like I did with that ford. Just a little bit of each paycheck. I cant really work on my bike that way. No Garage or enough money to strip it down and rebuild it. Plus I like riding it too much to take it apart and not have another bike.

Anyway, thats my story about australian cars.
