Any coin collectors?
« on: January 21, 2011, 10:50:32 PM »
Hey All,
My Granddad was a VP of a bank in Mass.  in the 50 and 60's he had a  heck of a collection.  Auctioned off in estate sale my dad was pissed cause he said was prob worth 250,000 in the 80's  and didn't go for anything like that in the sale. My dad was bitter about that deal. He Passed in 98. Well he has a collection just as a hobby. Mostly penny's. I found a tri fold of penny's I collected as a kid and I do have a 1914 d :) and 1911 S. I have some 1970 S with the s real close to the date and some further away. All seemed to be the same size date. Mink mark seems to change in position a little. I also opened up an envelope with 46 silver quarters in it. I showed it to the coin guy down the street. Says he will give me 4.25 for each quarter. So he need to make something so figure there worth about $7.

Thank's

Paul

those are nice.
Si I just got back from the coins store. For a trifold of wheat penny's offered me 100.00  it has a 1911 s in it and a 1914 D maybe something else but not complete set. All the silver i had hes was interested in and offered me 350 for it. So I just found a box of say's 1960. found one roll of 1955 in it. Look's like it is time to start checking each one. Checking for that one Double stamped one. HeHe that would be nice.

I have 21 1921 silver dollars.  These are the more valuable Peace Dollars and not the Morgan Dollars.  They are in circulated condition not mint so may be worth around $100 each.  Came from my father in law's stuff.  1921 was his birthday.

Those Peace dollars are very cool, the go on the 'bay for $40-100 for circulated specimens, and into crazy money for key date and mintish ones.
I wouldn't sell any silver I have anytime soon, the way things are going, some very smart people are predicting silver to double or triple in the next few years to a decade.  Eventually silver may normalize back to its 15:1 ratio with gold.
Where do you go in Mpls for coins?  I like ARCC down in Bloomington.

Just my $0.02, but I'd advise against selling any of your silver to anyone anytime soon.  It's only going to go up in value and if you sell at $30/ozt you'll be unhappy when it tops $50 in the near future.  I'm just sayin...

I had a buddy who's dad owned a bar, when the money was changing he kept any silver he found for years. When the Hunt Brothers tried to corner the silver market in the late 70s or early 80s, and pushed it momentarily from $5 to almost $30, he got lucky and dumped it all at the peak, did real well. As others have said, I also think now is the time to hold or buy, not sell, even though it's tempting.

Those are cool notes, SW.  Is the $1000CDN still in circulation?
Here in the US, our $500's and $1000's are not, and they sell for $2000 each in coin shops!

That 1000 is from the 30's to early 60's.  Edit: Just looked it up "1954"  http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/banknotes/general/character/1954_tho.html
who knew?

The newer 1000's were color, but they stopped those 10 years ago.

When I started saving money for my property I used $1000.00 bills.  Stopped me from spending it.  I finally had enough of them to buy my dirt.
The one in the photo was an old one I kept to remind me.
