Exhaust ?
« on: March 26, 2006, 07:35:57 PM »
Has anyone tried this muffler from denniskirk?

http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=Main&catId=403&productId=p442641&leafCatId=40302&mmyId=#altImages

It seems that it needs another part - a $65 packing kit - to work properly.  I don't know what the diameter is on the 4-1 headers.  It looks like a rather sexy muffler to me but I don't know if it will fit.

Hey, it's a Supertrapp. Cheap, heavy, prone to rusting, etc, etc.

I've got one on my CB500. Don't know if would fit up directly to anything made by Honda. I use the whole system, consisting of headers with 4-1 collector, a "transition" pipe (8 inches of mild steel tube), and the end can. If you want, I can measure the ID of the can, although I can't guarantee it's the exact same model.

You'll need to repaint it after a couple of years. You can adjust backpressure by adding or removing diffuser disks, if that means anything to you.

If you're looking for cheap and semi cafe cool, it's the bees knees. If you're looking for something nice to dress up your scoot, you'll probably be dissapointed. IMO, of course.

I know Supertrapp has been around for some time now and for different applications. I also new that you could adjust the back pressure. What I don't know is, what do they sound like? I've never personally heard one. Are they quiet, loud, good sounding fairly loud or what? That's all I have.

The more plate, the lower the back presure the louder the sounds.

...And vise versa

The fewer the plates, the higher the presure the quieter the sound....

I don't think it's a really great sound, Bill. Kind of tinny, almost Volkswagon-ish.

Nothing, IMO, compares to the sound of a 4-into-4 with minimal baffling. I just don't have a thousand bucks laying around looking for a place to be spent.

...I like it based on looks alone...and for $50 I'd say give it a shot.  I know theres alot of conjecture about exhaust and what they add/remove from performance.  However, I'm not convinced the exhaust makes that much of a difference.  If u'r truly trying to squeeze every ounce of HP out of u'r bike, then maybe, but I think for most of us the exhaust won't much difference one way or another AS LONG AS your carbs are tuned to what ever exhaust you are running.  Stock carbs are tuned to work with the stock exhaust if the exhaust (or air filter) is changed, then the carbs (jetting, needle postion) must be tuned to work with the new exhaust.

The Horse (a chopper mag) did a tech article some time back where they took an HD and tested it on a dyno with stock exhaust and then again with straight pipes.  The dyno results actually showed more HP with the straight pipes, than with the stock exhaust.  When is the last time you saw a bike on the track with baffled exhaust?

If we were serious about horsepower, we'd put on modern systems -- and I'm not talking about the lowball mild steel and chrome silliness from Kerker, Jardine, Supertrapp, etc. -- I mean modern stuff like Akropovic, Hindle, et al.

I mean, really, the stock exhaust -- and the cheapo replacement stuff -- is ancient technology, and it weighs a ton. Drop a grand or so on the latest titanium system, figure out how to bodge it onto your bike, and you'll drop 15 or 20 pounds, and open the wide world of broad, flat power curves. Hell, throw on a set of the latest CV carbs and you'll have a whole new bike.

But the fact is that most of us make do with the low-end stuff, me included. So we buy what looks good, what we feel like paying for, and then we spend an eternity fiddling with our equally low tech carbs, trying to get the bike to run as well as it used to. And if you're like me, the bike won't ever see a dyno. (If you're really like me, you're just happy with a bike that idles and accepts throttle. We'll just ride around that massive midrange hole that our cool new $100 pipes made.)

Two cents, etc.
