I've heard good things but haven't been there.
I think it's mainly for the newbie that may not have tools and little experience.

If only I'd had this on Bluebonnet Ave. some 3 years back. Glad nobody saw me perpetrate mechanical motocide on my first bike, though. It felt a bit lonely working on old Jap bikes in Austin then. Glad to see stars and newbie shadetree mechanics collide.

I went to the Co Op today. It was ridiculously fun. Just about 12 people working on bikes. Most the people knew what they were doing, but me and a couple other people just had a general idea. There are three guys that run the co op, all with professional motorcycle mechanic experience. And several local shop owners showed up to help for an hour or two.

I was there from about 9.30am until about 8pm. So, all day. I helped out with the basic things I knew, and got to shoot the #$%* with motorcycle riders, which I never get to do in person. There was pizza and beer donated so I had my share of each.

For my bike, they walked me through a full tune up, minus the valve adjustment, which I need to do and checking carb sync. I also changed my oil for the first time, pretty basic, but I wanted someone there to make sure I didnt break my bike in half or something. Cleaned and adjusted my chain, cleaned my battery replaced my oil gauge. And several little things. I was getting ready to leave at around noon and then again every two hours, but I would start talking about something and without any hesitation someone would respond, "well lets do that real quick."

Sorry to gush, but today was like six flags for me. Its awesome. I highly recommend it to anyone in Austin whether you need help or can give it. Its feel-good community service, and hanging out with a bunch of guys and working on bikes is more fun than I have had in a while.

Sounds like a fun deal, I wish they had something like that in Mypos.
We only have cart Co-ops.

PM me for my number if you want to cruise or something, i need to check out the co op and teach all these old farts how to work on bikes, because im 24 and know EVERYTHING. it seriously sounds awesome. i paid 30k to go to WHY-O-tech, i got student loans up the ass, and they have never once helped me get a job. after all the help and time i spent wrenching on my own bike ive gotten a job at 3 different and all very awesome motorcycle shops. best things in life are definitely free, and 70s hondas.

I saw an ad on CL in the Oakland, Ca area of a guy trying to do the same thing. Except he was looking for investors to get the ball rolling. It was him and I think two other guys. Seemed like he was looking for a cash cow.

The point of co-ops of this kind are not to make money but pool it amongst members so you can have more access to nice stuff.
Kind of defeats the intent behind a co-op.

Another way to do something like this is for someone to sponsor a maintenance day. I have done that in the past at my home. People came over, we got to meet and BS, you got something fixed by someone that had a clue, you got free lunch and beer and had a great darn time to boot. One guy came from Maine!

I think they are going to start moving towards a co op group membership fee. of like $15 a year, just to cover small supplies and maybe get a few items like a wheel balancer or something. They are going to get t shirts made up as well to try and cover the cost.

I know they are looking to open a shop and are kind of using the group to get a loyal customer base, which is genius.

The guys are cool as hell though. When I stripped my bolt I called one and asked him to come over and look at it in exchange for lunch. He came down from Austin, looked it over for me, bled my brakes to unclog the return and had to go before lunch. Ive emailed guys here on the forums in the area asking for a once over on my bike, since im a noob and all, and didnt get that kind of response.

I just sent an email to confirm but I think the next co op is Saturday. They might be full on people that need to have their hands held the whole way (me) but if any of you Austin guys are free, then you should come down.
