Thinking about the future. Move to Oregon or Washington
« on: January 24, 2011, 06:44:45 AM »
Hey guys, as some of you know I'm having a hard time finding a decent job in Bloomington Indiana. I work in IT and have been doing desktop support, and NOC monitoring for about 12 years. Unfortunately I never went to school and so, no degree. Most of the IT jobs around here require a degree, so I'm going back to school.  I'm thinking that when I finish school I want to move back to the Pacific Northwest. I know there are a boatload of IT jobs in the Seattle/Redmond area, but what about the Portland area? Also what areas around portland would be good to move to. I'm liking semi-quite (no college parties)areas to live in without HOAs.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Well, jobs of any sort are as thin here as anywhere. I'm not in IT, but from what I've seen over the last couple of years, internal IT positions are becoming scarce.
However having said that this IS the 'silicone forest', you might have better luck here than someplace like West #$%*hole, Arkansas...

Still plenty of good, quiet, non-HOA places to live.

Here's th CL section for seattle
http://seattle.craigslist.org/tch/
Pretty good amount of jobs compared to my area
http://bloomington.craigslist.org/search/tch?query=+

Not much there and all the IT jobs at the local university require a degree and pay badly. You can make about 10-12 an hour here at a few of the mid range IT jobs. Unfortunately rent in this area will take up more than half your income for that range.

As long as you like rain, and lots of it.I moved out from the east coast 5 years ago and still aint used to it.Doesnt get real cold out here on the coast,It was in the 50's yesterday and I actually went for a nice ride on the CB.
its better to regret something you have done, than something you havent.Except playing with explosives.

I commuted from Everett WA to Redmond after dark in the rain for almost 2 years before I moved back to Indiana. I got used to it fast. I will miss the thunderstorms in the midwest, but that's about all. Ok, I'll miss the biscuits and gravy, and the breaded pork tenderloins too.

I've been in IT for almost 12 years and have a BSIT degree. Jobs are few and far between in Georgia.

If I can't make it in IT out there, i can always fall back on my other skills. I do 3d game art, and I was a baker for 16 years.
Rusty on the 3d so I'm praticing a lot now and importing into the UDK.

Well I have friends that live outside of Seattle and they love it. My sis lives in Portland ans she loves it. I've been there and I love it. Also have a friend that is a game programmer. That is a very cut throat business.

Game art is even worse. Lots of teams get let go after a project, at least in the smaller studios. Places like Amaze, Bungie, and Sony are better.
Not that 3d matters yet. I'm wanting to get back on at Microsoft. The benefits there are great.

Places to live are at least twice as expensive on the West Coast.  3 or 4 times in the Bay Area.  But- you can't beat the moto culture and the coffee.  No Starbucks in Seattle   ;D
There are TONS of bakeries out there, too.  Getting a job that way may not be as hard- while you work on getting what you want.

If I had any skill and ambition, I'd still be out there.
OTOH- we have grits and biscuits.  And not stinky instant grits, either.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

You would be suprised about the coat of living here. Rent in the Everett WA area is only about 2-300 more a month than here, and the pay is better for all my skill sets out there. OK, I'm not sure of the oregon areas.
Beaverton OR seems to have the most tech jobs of the Oregon places. Anyone here live around there?

Uncle Ernie how do you like Asheville? I visited it quite a bit and it's on my list of potential moves sometime in the future.

I grew up in Seattle.
I go back almost every summer--couldn't be nicer!

I still remember a warm summer night in the 50's when
Tommy Eggleston and his buddies on their Triumphs and Harleys blasted
down 43rd past my house and up the Dravis Street  hill.
My fate was sealed.

Been a Warshintonian all my life.  Grew up in Bellevue.  Work in Redmond & Bothell. Live east of Everett in Snohomish.  itsa pretty area. Fishing is a big part of my life, so I can put up with the rain....it brings steelhead and salmon in :)
If i had to move my family....Beaverton/Tigard/Sandy, OR would be the first places i'd look.
Nice areas.

"Been a Warshintonian all my life" Samo samo!

I got into a discussion just the other day about how many people have moved to our state in the past couple of years, jobless that adds to our enemployment rate. I think plenty. So good luck in PDX!

Well, I been here a few years, worked in Beaverton and Hillsboro and now working in Tigard, don't have a BS, but I've got a couple AAs; computer tech and network systems, there ARE jobs here, but it IS a tight market. There's a lot of big companies, and hospitals and lawyers too, either based, or well represented here, if IT is what you want. And a whole lot of great riding area on and off road, hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, the beach....and more strip clubs and porn stores per capita than anywhere else in the nation. Good beer too, and the Willamette Valley wine district isn't more than an hour away...although it seems to take longer gittin home than it does to get there.......   ;D

I just want to say in my defense that I fit in better outthere than I do here. I'm just not redneck enough for Indiana, and don't own a cruiser.
I also miss my fav shop out there, Bent Bike. Tons of spares.
