How much front wheel spin normal?
« on: January 23, 2011, 11:37:39 PM »
With brakes adjusted, how many times should the front wheel spin freely before stopping? It's a little subjective a test I realize, but I haven't yet heard a consensus amount of normal wheel free play with the brakes installed and adjusted and with there being a natural floating or kissing of the pad being present?

Thanks!

Not gonna lie, 2 out of 3 of those answers were real clunkers! I guess you gotta pad your number if you want to get to be an "old timer" huh?!!
Just saying, I've seen the question asked before, with the only answers being vague "it should spin..." Figured we could establish an average or something.

Right after brake application there's a fair bit of friction. Go for a ride around the block without using the front brake and put it on the centre stand - but don't touch that brake lever. The wheel will spin much more freely. The brake caliper piston retracts a bit when the lever is released but the pads touching the disc will push themselves apart more in a few minutes riding. With the lever relaxed the brake fluid will flow back to the reservoir freely if the piston is pressed back.

....your front rotor should not be hot (indicating a dragging pad)...

The condition of the wheel bearings, speedometer drive, and even wheel balance have a big effect on free spin of the front wheel, too.  With all these variables, including the biggest one (how much force is used to spin the wheel), there is no "correct" number of spins.  As long as all the wheel components are verified by yourself to be in good condition, and the rotor doesn't heat up when the front brake isn't used, you're in good shape.

Grateful for the feedback guys. I've worked on many other disc brakes, just trying to get some idea as to what "normal" is on these wacky ol cb set ups.
