So I got an offer I couldn't refuse from someone with a hard on for my 550 and I loaded it into his mom's minivan and off it went.  The void in the garage didn't last long as I found a smokin' deal on a 750 in great shape.  It was 3 hours out in the desert and had been for sale for a while so I rented a van and committed to checking it out.  The PO's remoteness and the dryness of the climate equaled a good deal on a very clean bike.

The bike runs like a top and cafe process had already begun.  The brakes are both firm, starts on the first or second kick, and the carbs have been successfully tuned to the pods and 4 into 1 (although the supertrap muffler has GOT TO GO!).  This is going to be a mostly aesthetic and refurb project from here on out.

Outfitted with Takasago Excel aluminum rims and Buchanan's stainless spokes, Tommaselli vintage chrome clip ons (looooow), and what looks to be a Vietnamese cafe seat, the stance is very comfortable and aggressive.  One thing that needs work is the suspension.  It has ROCK HARD springs in the back, with what looks like a spring spacer to make it even stiffer and taller.  I've got stock suspension en route.  The front forks are weeping at the seals and I'm going to do race tech emulators and new seals ASAP.  Also all balls tapered steering bearings.

The plan is to do a frame off clean up including full powdercoat of frame and misc. parts, tank paint and strip off the peeling black rattle can engine paint.  Obviously this is the most expensive step so it will go on as finances allow.

The rear tire is freakin' square, apparently the PO liked going in a straight line.  The gauges have seen better days and I'm looking for a set if anyone has any lying around.  I'm also planning on simple dummy lights on the gauge mounts for neutral, oil pressure, etc.  The starter has been disconnected and I'm going to install a small switch somewhere on the dash.

I'll take some more photos as the process continues, but right now it's 75 degrees and sunny in San Diego so I'm going to ride the hell out of it while I can!

Definitely planning on the rally.  I'm not going to dig into any project that can't be finished in a weekend, so the simple suspension stuff, tires, and functional repairs are priority #1.  The frame off paint and resto is gonna have to wait till the $$$ situation is better.

Well that's the tricky thing.  I don't have the flexibility that retirement offers so hopefully my leg is on or around a weekend so I can go some distance.  Also, we'll have to get creative on the drive from SD north so it's not boring freeway.  I really wish I could take several days and participate in the Central Cal portion.  I've always wanted to ride there.  What's your plan?  The map only shows a few of us in so. cal. participating.  There's gotta be more out there!

I was planning on going out to the coast like maybe Monterey and running on into Reno but I may just wait till it gets closer to my zone (Modesto) and taking it a bit past Reno (Fallon or Fernley) because Greg from Idaho would rather do the handoff there and he will have alot of miles on his plate compared to me. We will see as things progress. Hope you can make it dude.

Alright y'all, I've been working diligently flushing the bugs outta this monster and I've made some real progress.  List of work includes:

Changed the jet black oil and filter of course.  I degreased the whole bike and simple greened everything I could.  I overhauled the carbs, which were naaasty and varnished.  I adjusted the valve clearances.  I adjusted the cam chain.  I cleaned and oiled the K&N pods.  Replaced crappy Taiwanese points with OEM and tuned and timed.  I replace the clutch plates and springs, as well as clutch and throttle cables.  I rebuilt the master cylinder, replaced brake lines, banjo bolts, and pads.  I installed new speedo and tach cables and replaced the burned bulbs in the clocks.  I replace fuel lines and cleaned the tank and rebuilt the petcock.  I rebuilt the front forks with new seals.  I replaced the rock hard unknown rear shocks with OEM.  I installed new bar controls (it had none) and wired a functional start button, kill switch, indicator button, horn.  I installed cafe mirrors, OEM side panels, the bubble fairing, and sportbike turn signals.  WHEW.  Here's how she sits today.

My original plan was to do a frame off paint/powdercoat, but I'm afraid I wouldn't get it done in time for the rally.  I'm pretty happy with how is sits and how it's performing, so I'm going to keep it together for now.  Probably just going to paint and wrap the exhaust, fit some new rubber, and put some miles on her.

Wow!!!!! You've been busy this past month!!! Lots of work done. We still have aprox. 2.5 months to go before rally time. Have you found any other riders from your area?? It does'nt have to be SOHC (but preferred). It would suck having to ride any great distance on your own although doable. Keep in touch.
