roller bearing/ steering stem question - need a quick answer
« on: January 26, 2011, 10:40:02 AM »
I'm right in the middle of ordering a few parts and need some advice.

If I'm going to replace the old ball bearings with roller bearings, which of the parts below do I not need?  I think I know, but just wanted to double check with someone who's been there.  Thanks!

14,15, and 9 are not included in the bearing kit. Every bearing kit I've seen includes everything needed for the changeover(Bearings, races, spacing washers).

EDIT: changed "5" to "15". It's the three parts at the top of diagram ;)

Most (all) bearing kits will replace the races and bearings, #5, 20, 1, 2, 20, and 6.

Some kits require you to re-use the dust seal, #3.  Other kits include a replacement seal.

Many (most?) bearing kits will replace the dust seal backing washer (#7) with a thicker spacer washer, as the stack height of roller bearings is usually different from the stack height of the original bearing setup.  If you do a search on "bearing stack height" that should lead to some useful information about the spacers.

I like the All Balls steering bearing kits personally, as they include the seals and spacers.
