On a cb550 you just pierce the old seal with a sharp screwdriver and lever it out, being carefull not to nick the shaft or scratch the cases.

400f is the same (though easier if you pull the gearchange shaft out from the clutch side), while on a 750 it's fitted into a separate cover to the crankcases so just pull that off.

Ditto on the 650.

grab a lenth of small diameter pipe that matches the diameter of the new seal and you will be able to press/lightly hammer the new seal on evenly, very important.  Once you get the left engine cover back on, slide an oring over the shifter shaft before putting the shifter lever back on and this will minimalize the movement responsible for wearing those seals out.

wow. thanks all. that was super easy. now to replace the thing - anyone know of a place in the states that stocks them? my honda place says 7-10 days. I want one overnighted to me.

maybe I could find the same piece in a seal and bearing shop? any experiences with that?

Grrrrr....I just need this one $3.86 part to finish my project, and seems virtually no honda shop in the NY city area has one. Either that or the parts guys at the places are too lazy to get off their asses and look. Most say no before I even finish describing what I need! I guess I just have to wait a week before I can fill it with oil and start it up.

The only items most dealerships readily stock are oil filters/oil, sparkplugs, tires(for modern bikes) and batteries.

Check Ebay from time to time. I picked up and engine oil seat kit that had an assortment of the needed seals, all with matching Honda part numbers.  I can't remember but it was under 10 bucks.  Included about 7 seals.  I've only had to use the shifter shaft seal though.

What model bike are you looking for?  Look in the parts fiche for the seal, and sometimes they will give the dimensions - then hit the Honda dealer for anything that's the same size. I don't think they're anything special or super custom.  For instance, my '75 550 calls for: 13.8x24, part # 91202-KFL-841  which I think is a generic part number - meaning it's not specific to my bike, but a standard Honda thing that may be used on a whole bunch of bikes.

It was easy on my 74 550, but I think someone mentioned that the sprocket (or just the chain?) had to be removed to replace this seal on the later 550s.

I got the kit off of ebay, but the Honda dealer down the street from me had the seal.

I know of a local bearing shop that would have it.  I get almost all my bearings and seals there.
In Denver CO.  Would think in NYC there is some thing.  Sounds like the dealers are just to lazy.
Seal probably fits several bikes.

yep i got one at JRK Bearing and Seal - 1470 Coney Island Blvd (between Avenues K&L) in Brooklyn - i gave the guy the dimensions and he produced two within 12 seconds for $4 a piece - with double lip seals too - better than stock. Man - that is getto industrial brooklyn if i've ever seen it. even the bearing and seal shop has a steel gate and bullet proof door. who robs bearing and seal shops? it was a fun ride out there on my 750F though.
