Step one is almost complete....
« on: March 28, 2006, 05:44:42 PM »
Well, the recently purchased sandcast is in a thousand pieces.  You would think that
Honda would have better coordinated the use of fasteners.  I think there is every length
and every size metric bolt on there.  Most of them are going to the chrome place to be
re-chromed or re-zinced so in order to keep up easily with where they came from, I laid them
all on a (large) piece of paper, traced around them, and noted beside them where they came
from.  Probably an overkill, but the parts manual can be tricky to interpret sometimes.

The frame and all the iron parts are off to be powder coated.  I haven't seen one done this way
so I hope it turns out well.  ::)

The tank has two small dints. Unfortunately one is where one of the emblems goes, and I have
not a clue how you remove dints.  Do you pull them out somehow like they do hail strikes on cars
or just fill them in and paint over.  ???

I placed an order with David Silver Spares and it arrived in less then a week.....better then three
US orders placed at the same time so the service was great from them.  I'm tempted to order new
exhausts from them but someone said they come with extraneous markings other then the HMXXX
ones.  I think I'll wait for a first hand report before ordering.

The engine was running before I tore the bike apart so the question is for a valuable sandcast
engine to you risk tearing it down for inspection or just pretty up the externals and go with it??
My thought now is to leave well enough alone. :-\

If I had the money, I would do exactly that.

I'm considering saving for it.  If I can put aside half of it this year, I should be set.

Actually, I would rather have your project, but then again, I don't have a place to work on it.  That and the money, but if I did.... Oh man...

If the engine run then just clean it and don't touch it. There will come the time for a rebuild, and maybe you have sold the bike before.

I didn't rebuild my CB750 -thought it was not a runner when I bought it- because with a little wrenching I started it and it didn't need restoring. The CB350 needed a full restore, so provided that I was at it...
