Author Topic: Trade non running K0 cb750 for running '79 CB650? (Read 3261 times)

Hi all, Ive got a '69 (though the title says '70 for some reason) cb750. It has some elctrical issues, not sure what, and hasn't run since 02 as far as I know. It is missing the headlamp and chrome ring/lamp holder.
engine # 1010739, frame number 1010812.
I need a running bike, and someone has offered a running (but needing a head gasket replacement) 79 650 in trade. Is this a fair trade, or should I ask for a bit of cash besides? I know the 650 is basically a bored 550. I know also that the 650 is much less sought after.
Please tell me your thoughts. I live in the pacific northwest.

I'd get the 750 running, but that's me. The headlamp and chrome ring are easy to get and the electrics on these bikes are not hard.

I'll take your non-running '69 over a dozen 650s.

Do you have the ducktail seat? Recessed ignition? Cut front fender? Short chainguard? Your pic is kinda small.

Also, go to David Silver Spares and get some HM300 pipes for that baby!!

I'd love to get the 750 running, but money and time constraints are weighing on me.

That would be a sweet project. I'll bet you could get it running and back in tip-top shape in less than a month.

Very little money, and need something to ride pretty much asap. I figure I can only put about 600 a month into this project as it stands.

Still, I'd get a beater to ride and then do the project over the summer.

That could be a NICE ride when done, but it will take some work.

If it was me Id keep the 750. The wiring problem on it cant be as involved as the head gasket on the 650.

If you've got $600 a month to spend on the bike theres no reason why you shouldnt keep the 750.....especially if all it needs is a headlite and ring. The wiring can be figured out.

I started with a $200 beater bike. All I had to spend on it to get it running was the cost of a new set of plugs. It had wiring issues but it ran. Then with the help of all the nice folk on here I got them sorted out.

All Im saying is dont let a good bike go for a 79 650. Dont get had. Alot of people ....me included......would give their left nut for a early model 750.

Not counting the $200 initial purchase price.......I might have $300 in this bike........

If we were voting on it, I'd say the 750 cause that IS one sharp looking ride. I'd pick up on
that Suzuki (or whatever) and even if it took a while to get that 750 up and running, so what.
I don't know that much about the 750s but, if you can hang onto this one, I don't see how you

Looking at your bike in the photos, the parts alone are worth more than the 79 650 - if thats a red original uncracked airbox that alone will fetch many $$$s on Ebay ($400++) and then there is your sidecovers - if uncracked then your looking at $500 + for the set and if your headlight shell is uncracked then again worth many $$s..... Im not trying to get you to part it out but thats just a few parts that are worth more than the price of a 650....now...if you take into account the 750 is more reliable (once running) and will last a lot longer (probably)....Id personally hang on to your 750 and make it something to ride for a long time. Dosent have to be completely stock but at the moment its looking sharp and the wiring is actually not so hard.....if I can do it then anyone can....look in the FAQ (in this Forum) and get a colour-coded wiring diagram and follow that - really quite easy once you get the hang of it....and believe me it took me a while! And get a multimeter from Sears ($20) and test your wires....

Keep the 750. Use the first $600 to buy a running something to keep you moving, then fix the 750. Besides, it's not even a fair trade: the 650 doesn't have a kick-starter. Not apples-for-apples.

Keep the 750, damn did I say that and I've got a 650. And I think you can patch up that 750 for very little outlay just be patient

I think your are right to walk away. Looks like a nightmare project.
Seriously, where are you located in PNW and would a cash infusion allow you to rid yourself of this daunting project so you could buy what you want?

Yeah, I'm sure there are a lot ot the guys who WISH they had a bike like that to start
with. Looks like you've got a great starter bike already. "Back Away From The Trade" If nothing
else, look at what KC started with and look at how it's turning out. Think about it. I've got

Keep the 750!!!!!!, even if you don't do the work yourself,
   a good local mech. would probably do the electricals on the
   side, as well as clean out the carbs. you would be surprised ,
at how much you could get done for the money.and in a short time.
   for a dialy driver, i picked up a cb400, for 200.00 that all I had to do was
   clean it out and ride it, while I overhauled my cb650sc.
   There isn't a question, that someone on this forum
   doesn't have an solution for......Keep the 750......

byidesign makes some good points. There are a lot of guys on this site who have the
knowledge and the experience to handle about anything you could come up with and their
response come pretty quick also. You won't be left in a lurtch (I guess that's how you spell
it), if you know what I mean. Just look at what they've done with theirs and you've already
got a heck of a good start.

If any of ya have a RUNNING moto in my area for two to four hundred bucks, lemme know. I'm in portland.
I guess I'm just dreading yanking all the wiring apart. Some jackass electrical-taped it all together in various dog-#$%* shaped lumps.
I just haven't done a whole lot of electrical work on bikes or cars before.

/edit: heres a kawi in my area. I'm just kinda loath to spend 350 on a bike as ugly as this

Mine was advertised at $500, but I got if for $350 because that's what I offered (negotiated actually). Ya never know. Either way, if you have $600/mo to burn, take the remainder from month #1 and buy a new wiring harness if this one's all chopped up. It beats the hunt & peck method of electrical discovery.

I buy complete wiring harnasses off eBay for $12-$20 each. And they are in great shape. Just be patient and wait for the one you want. some guys go nuts and bid them up to $40 or so - but there are tons of them on the Bay every week.
So forget fixing the butcher job - get a good used one. Or for $75 get an NOS one from several different suppliers.

I s'pose I could make a little cafe racer for the girl out of the 400 after I finish the 750.
Theres a few members here at sohc4 that have a workspace down near where I work. Mebbe I'll talk to em about getting some help for some cash or some such.

What duster said! I know the other bike is a Kawasaki but, it looks a lot like a Honda
CB350. Kawasakis aren't bad bikes. They don't have the following of the Hondas but hey, they
can't all be the best. Bargain for and get the Kawasaki. Like you said, you could do a number on it
