400$ and a title...ok!
« on: January 29, 2011, 03:46:48 PM »
1978 cb750SS 19K miles on the Odometer...complete save for the side panels. Its going to be a fix and ride type of thing...for now. Last owner says the carbs are clogged...he is my mechanic and pretty straight forward. Things I need first.

battery
brake cable/s
throttle cable
petcock
tank cleaned and sealed

It has been sitting out in the weather for a while so all the cables are all stuck and/or sticky.

I think I will try some seafoam in the carbs to try and cheap my way into atleast getting it running.

after running

tires

hopefully the carbs are my only problem as it does feel like it has nice compression when I kick it over.

We will see.

PICS!

Looks like you got a good deal - and a mechanic to help, too!  Can't beat that.

right now I just want to ride it. It will be my only motorized vehicle as I ride bikes everywhere else. My feelings right now are not leaning in any direction as far as modification. The cafe look is nice...but I wouldn't want to half-ass a cafe bike. We will see how it goes. I have been looking for the right bike and the clutch in a family members truck led me to this beauty sitting outside and begging me to save it from the weather. Tax return came and allowed it. the bike really is nice. the chrome front fender looks perfect...everything else will clean up nice. It needs grips too...hah

Do motocross bars fit on these bikes? I want some regular style bars...not drag bars...not clip ons...just regular bars...but with a little bit lower stance.

Edited my info...I am in Houston Texas

You'd probably be happy with some super bike bars or euro bars... Have fun with it. Glad I don't have ride in Houston. You people are crazy on the freeway!  :D

And I WOULD hate you, but I got mine for $100(no title, though)!  :o
Just calculated the cost of putting on a dual disc front brake, Comstars ,and rear disc brake... You win. I hate you. There. I said it. Hate you.

Nice find, and it looks good.

The bike I found wasn't too old either had 14K miles.

Biggest thing is it's dirty.

What are your plans for it?

The cafe look is nice...but I wouldn't want to half-ass a cafe bike.

Well done mate, we've all seen too many half-arsed cafe builds, and a nice clean F2 (or F3) with tasteful mods is a thing of beauty anyway. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Terry, you have some of the prettiest motorcycles. I like my (half assed)cafe, but you're right it could have been a bad ass mildly upgraded stocker. Oh well, its already been fubar'd might as well shoehorn a modern swingarm in and slap on some USD forks! In time...

Ha ha, thanks for the compliment and don't be offended because I wasn't taking a shot at anyone in particular mate, but the F2/3 is very much under-rated, due to the (relatively minor) problems associated with the engines revised head/cam, but these things are now easily fixed, due to the input from APE/Cyclex etc.

When F2 parts were hard to obtain I converted mine to run a K6 top end, but in time I'll recondition the head, (or get one of APE's, more likely) install an 836cc kit and a better cam (probably a mild Megacycle) and along with the F2's excellent brakes and handling, it should be good for many years to come. Aesthetically, they are a sportier look than a "K", and don't really need as much modification to make them look like a racer. Cheers, Terry. ;D

It must just be only the F0/1 that you badmouth then. ;D  Is that a Motad exhaust and any issues with fitting it?  Nice looking bike.

Nice find for TMNT too.  No need to seal the tank unless it has been compromised by corrosion.  Clean it out with an acid bath or electrolysis and you are good to go.  Liners fail all to often due to a less than perfect application.  Plenty of info on tank cleaning if you do a search.  Common for the brakes to be locked up from sitting  so you may want to do a rebuild on the MC's and calipers.  Lot of info on that here too.

G'Day Rusty, yeah mate, the F/F1 is an aberration in the eyes of God, in my self-conceited opinion (and I can say that, I bought one new, back in the day, and hated it from about day 3...........) but the F2/3 was (is) a far superior bike, both aesthetically and mechanically, with perhaps only an 8/10 for the engine's (exaggerated) top end issues.

The pipe is a NOS "no brand" Japanese made pipe from the 1970's that I found at a swap meet, it does look like a Motad, and it definitely has a "deep tone" sound. I've had it installed on both my K1 and F2 and it seems to fit both bikes well. Thanks for the compliment mate, I must dust my F2 off and take it for a ride soon! ;D

So the best thing to do is buy a used coil with plug wires off ebay? Mine literally fell apart when I pulled them. They are 50$ used on ebay...are they available new? If so are they extremely expensive?

They are available new for around $100 each.  Keep an eye on the for sale section here too.  I would trust the forum before some junk peddler on Ebay.

Check the for sale listings mate, someone will have a set of coils for you for less than 50, or lash out for a new set of Dyna's (5 Ohm) coils which are far superior to OEM, new for around 120. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I got new caps...got a lot of stuff unstuck...lubes and got a battery. It will run if I pull the choke...the bottom cable is loose. I can pop it out with my finger. I am thinking they need to be adjusted properly...but when I can keep it running it sounds great. Could be a vacuum problem? Is that possible on these bikes? Also the carb drain holes at the bottom of the carbs dont have hoses attached so gas leaks out...I am not sure what they are. Learning as a I go with the bikes.

Well the carbs are not leaking because of the missing hoses. They just direct the flow to the ground instead of all over the engine if you have a leak.  If you have fuel leaking from the carbs it is an issue with the float and/or the needle valve and seat.  Or the overflow pipe in the carb is cracked.

The reason it won't idle without the choke on is because your pilot jets are blocked mate, I've never pulled a set of PD carbs off a CB750 that weren't. The fuel running out of the bottom of the over-flow tubes is caused by either your float valves leaking (they have rubber tips, and if having sat for awhile, will go hard) and flooding your carbs, or incorrect float levels, but I'm betting that it's your float valves. Cheers, Terry. ;D
