Internet TV
« on: January 30, 2011, 05:24:01 PM »
I walked into Best Buy tonight to get some info on internet for my television, just out of curiosity.
I walked out with a Logitech Revue with Google TV and a new dual band router.

I got the router set up tonight but the internet TV will have to wait. My TV is mounted on the wall and I'm going to need a little help getting it moved so I can run the HDMI wire through the wall.
And, of course, I start a long stretch of 12 hour shifts in the morning.  ::)

I'm looking forward to getting it set up. Is anyone else using it or a similar device, yet?

To clarify, this isn't just streaming television or apps. It's the internet viewed over my 42" plasma in the living room! Even has a small, wireless keyboard with it. I can surf the net, etc., while sitting on my couch.
The only thing that keeps it from being a computer is the lack of a hard drive. It will be connected to the 'net through my wireless router. I can go anywhere online that I could go to on my desktop or laptop.

you can do the same with the game consoles, I don't have a keyboard for the wii but you can get them.

I want to ditch the cable tv and figure out how to watch tv over my cable internet. its the same line in, I shouldnt have to pay for it twice

I am running an acer gaming system on my 28'' tv. Dont have cable or anything, watch everything over the internet. Its nice and with a wireless mouse & keyboard I am sittin on the couch in comfort looking at a big ole computer screen. I would love to have an even bigger screen but I would probably have to upgrade the video card.

The xbox 360 is connected to my home network, so it's basically an extension of the main home PC.  Any video or pictures I can see on the home PC either via the internet or just off the hard drive I can also watch through the xbox on the main TV.

Computer or laptop to the TV sometime. Great for watching netflix. Wireless keyboard and a pointer mouse work well for couch surfing.

Internet TV via, the TV (sony ex710 55"), sony blu-ray (exact same setup as tv), also through xbox 360, ps3, and wii... oh and the computer is hooked to the tv too...all of which can be viewed via the tv or the 22" monitor near by (so i can play video games while she watches tv) #$%* i guess im a geek  :-[ the internet tv is cool, wish hulu wasnt charging... im paying for so many damn services as it is but its kind of cool to be able to do a split screen and have the tv going on the left and the internet on the right. dont get much done that way but it sure is cool!

just wait till bandwidth caps come into common play. Already starting to happen in Canada and Comcast does it too. Figures something like this would happen to make people pay for cable tv.

Yeah you might like to think that but with comcast buying nbc and already having some limits, once other ISPs see the cash being made by canadian ISPs using a cap, I would not be surprised if it happens. I sure do not want it too. I like streaming and not paying for cable tv.

Yea our larger Canadian ISP's have had caps for a while & even connection speeds with the cable company vary depending on what service (read price) you have (or pay).  Now all ISP's are moving to the cap system   It, of course is just coincidence that Netflicks started up here at the end of last year ;).  Hope somebody figues a way arund this shiite.

Hey Scott, if you bought one of those SUPER expensive HDMI cables from Best Buy take it back!!!  You can  get them super cheap on ebay and save a bundle (since you have 12hr shifts anyway, you don't have to worry about shipping time).  Digital is digital, so the cable either works or it doesn't.  Here is an example - 30 ft HDMI for $11.95 and free shipping.

I bought one like this a couple years ago and it's great!  I don't sell these things, I'm just passing on the info that someone else gave me a few years ago.

While I agree that name-brand hdmi cables are generally more expensive than they're worth, they're is actually a difference in different grades of cable.

Anyone tried the Comcast Xfinity? The only reason I'm thinking about it, is because they say if I sign up for it my bill will go down (strange, I know). Otherwise I don't even have a tv right now, and could care less.

My internet bill is 57$ a month for coax with somewhere between 7 and 12 Mbps. Comcast is a monopoly. My only other options are: Qwest DSL at only 3Mbps in my area, I am not in range of the USI Wireless, or I could go with satelite.

Don't listen to anything they tell you.  If they say it will cost you less to do something that they want you to do, it's almost guaranteed to be a lie.  On the plus side, if you create enough of a stink they will honor what they originally told you, just make sure to get them to quote you actual dollar amounts, and always ask to speak to a supervisor, because they're the only ones who can/will make any billing changes.  And calling to completely cancel your service will bring all kinds of "discounted" rates out of the woodwork.

Apparently industry calls this the "whiner rate." But if it saves me some cash, I'm all for it.

I've got a Roku box (www.roku.com).  You can get all kinds of streaming programming through your internet connection including Netflix, HuluPlus and boatloads of other pay and free content.  I really like it.  I pay for Netflix ($8 / month) and Huluplus ($8 / month).  Neflix is unlimited movies but if they don't have it, you can pay "per movie" with Amazon ($1.99 to $4.99).

There are newer TVs that have the same capabilities as a Roku box.  Some have wireless and/or wired internet connection (as the Roku box does).  The amount of content that's free is mind-boggling.  If you want to pay, you can get pretty much anything you want.

I have my iMac connected to the TV via HDMI.  Got the TV connected to the iMac using ethernet and then sharing it's WiFi connection for anything it needs.

Guess what folks, with the Internet TV thing coming, you will have antivirus and firewall apps running on them before long in some form!  You do know that Intel bought McAfee don't ya?

+1

most people wont see the difference between brand name and knock off's.... there really is. now its starting to boil down to gig transfer rates. but if you dont have high end equipment attached to both ends... it doesnt mean #$%*, and most any cable will do. i would never buy monster cable for my #$%*ty comcast cable box...

My last 6ft HDMI cable was about $3 on Amazon.  Works fine and I have not seen any interference.  I have all the cables wrapped together, inlucding the power.
