Looks great. My my frame is powdered the same color too. I'm also building a new harness for my 550 as well.

I am working on the petcock problem right now.

The tank I have uses the early 70's style 19mm center to center plate petcock.  There are two problems with this:
1) I dont have one of them
2) I dont want one of them

It would appear that no one makes an adapter plate, so I will probably have one machined.

Any thoughts?

I snapped a pic wit the tank and seat for fun

I think everyone is up for a bit of creative criticism every now and then.. your build and bike look great!!!

but have you thought about maybe ditching the skinny tubed rear end and going to a boxed rear swing arm? I don't know what your budget is or anything but I think that the bulky look on the rear would just finish it off.
just my 2 cents

I wanted to, but it seemed there were too many costs.

Swingarm, rim, offset sprocket.

Also I wasn't sure how it would affect handling.

I don't mind the 120 rear, not as wide as I wanted, but o well.

Making a petcock adapater is currently on hold.  I sent a couple designs which may work to a cnc shops for quotes, but I didnt really like any of them.  What I would like to find it a pre-made hose barb coupler with a flange mount, then place an intank fuel filter on the end of one barb, and a remote petcock on the other end.  EIther that of risk screwing up the paint and tank lining by welding on a 22mm bung...

Supplies for the wire harness are now on order.  I was too cheap to buy assorted colors of assorted wire gauges, most places only sell 100' spools which can get pricey.  SOme people sell assortments on ebay, but I tried to limit my order to a couple of suppliers.

SO, from waytek:
20AWG Cross Linked XLPE Wire (Yes, I said 20AWG)
14AWG Cross Linked XLPE Wire
35A SPDT Micro ISO Relays
SPDT Micro ISO relay sockets (and terminals)
Assorted polyolefin heat shrink tube
1/4" Expandable Sleeving (In hindsight something with a higher temperature resistance than 250F should have been used)
Misc bullet connectors for low profile connections in headlamp

From Allied:
TE Mini MLC 7 Pin connectors ($2/ea)
TE Ampseal 16, 3 and 6 pin connectors ($2/ea)

The miniMLC connectors are fairly small, considering the pin density, but low power so I am using that for connecting control switches to relays.
The Ampseal 16 connectors come in both 20 AWG and 14 AWG versions with contacts rated nearly 20A.  This is fine for most stuff, but if you want something higher power you may consider the molex mx150L series, they are cheap, sealed, and can handle 20-40A.  The problem with the mx150l connectors is that they are really long.  THe ampseal conenctors are fairly compact, and you could double up on the contacts to get a higher current rating.

Ampseal 16:

In another thread I saw someone say sudco recommended 120 mains, 70 pilots, YY5 in the 4 position, 2.5 slide, and 170main air jet for cr29s on a 550.

This motor is a 592cc, ported head, wecam 58a blah blah.

Do you think those will be safe settings for the eventual first turn over of this motor?

So the carbs sorta kinda dont fit well.... I cant fit the end carbs in with stacks installed.
The supplied spigots are way too long.

It looks like nearly 3/4" can come off.  Do you find it necessary to machine the lip back on?

Godfrey had a set of custom spigots for the 550 that he was selling.

I believe Brent (bwaller) machined his own carb spigots for his CR29s on his race bike. Guess that solved his spacing issues.

lol, well I suppose you are right.

I talked with the vendor who I got the carbs from.  They are going to machine me some shorter spigots.

The vendor I got the carbs from sent me a turned down set of spigots, fits great.

Now I need to figure out what throttle cable bits I need to modify the push-pull throttle assembly to work with the carbs.

Wow... so I have really been slacking on this project.  The project car saw some major set backs (read that as expensive...) then we went a bought a house which ended up having more termites in it then I expected...  SO I am going to try to make a good push now that the weather has turned.

The gas tank was built to accept the 1974 style petcock, I dont really care for that so I got this made by Misumi for about $25.  I will have to add a couple mounting holes to the tank, but I think it should work just as well as a 1974 petcock...

CycleX was able to find some good condition 1978 style long rocker shafts and coated them for me.  I forget what the coating is but they look real neat.

I guess you can update your signature now!   ;D ;D

For the uninitiated, can you enlighten me on why a late model valve cover is better?

I don't know how much it really matters, but my shafts were worn anyway so no harm done either way.

Great build. Looking way back — what was the stuff that you used to close up the engine while you painted it? Looks like some specialty stuff.
