wiring harness in frame?
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:05:17 pm »
Is anyone running their wiring harness through the frame rails? I am debating on doing this to hide and tuck all of the wires. I know the consequences and so. I am debating on doing this to my 77 750f.

theres really only the obvious issues of drilling holes big enough to pass wires through where all the frame parts are welded together...a good idea in mental form but probably not worth all the headache. plus you'll never get away from having wires exposed coming from the headlight around the stearing neck to pass into the frame.
In deeper than I should be...

Thanks for the reply Tim. I appreciate the feedback. I am going to try and tuck away as many wires as possible.
I guess we'll see what happens.

I wonder if a conduit subframe could be constructed, either using standard emt steel conduit, flex, or using copper tubing.  Could use the piping as the ground wires.

That's a pretty clever Idea.  The copper tubing would be perfect for a "steam-punk" type bike.

Cafe2be, good luck on hiding the wires, and please post pics of what you come up with!

bringing an old thread back to life as i don't want to start a new one on the same topic.

the issue didn't really seem addressed from the OP, but has anyone successfully ran their wiring through the frame, or at least a majority of the "big" wiring groups for cleanliness and security?  i think a couple of enlarged or well placed holes, with some smoothed washers for support and protection would help out a lot.

can anyone shed more light onto this??

Are you running the stock wire harness? I think that a complete rewire is required to minimize the wiring. The stock harness is very fat and the connectors for the alternator are huge. New wiring would need to extend these connections to a inconspicuous area. The main harness is actually pretty hidden as it is (except for around the steering stem. I completely rewired my 78 F and ran everything to the tail section. My main harness is about as thick as a pencil now. The wires that are the hardest to hide are the ones coming from the engine (Alternator, points, oil sending sending switch and neutral. This is about seven wires and would be a good 3/8" in diameter. I don't see why these could not be ran up one of the tubes, but I don't think there is a way to prevent the wires from being seen exiting the motor. I just ran them up the side of a down tube. They are not very noticeable.

Your other thread say that you are deleting the starter which is a huge wire to hide.

I'll be using a custom harness I'm sure, i think I can slim down the stock style harness pretty well.  I don't want to extend a stock harness to work with the tail electrics, so custom it is!  I think I could do a decent job snaking the smaller wires with heat shrink for protection.  I can run the battery cables along the inside of the frame to keep it hidden too.  Attention to detail is the biggest pain so far!!
