Animals around here!
« on: February 01, 2011, 03:07:20 PM »
Took the shot of the hawk about a week ago, and the shot of this coyote this morning.

The coyote had a partner but I could not get a shot because the second was traveling pretty fast when it came along the garage.

I was wondering where the carcasses of the 49 squirrels I have introduced to infinite rest, now I know.

I do not know of anyone domesticating a coyote, I assume they are not to be trusted, much like a wolf pup.

Can a dingo be domesticated?

To a degree, I have seen a few examples, they are extremely clever dogs. I saw a documentary on an old guy here that has his own wildlife refuge, he showed how clever they were by leaving his gate slightly ajar and turning his back to one of his dingo's, the Dingo then proceeded to walk backwards toward the gate with its eye's on him the whole time, when the guy turned and looked at the dingo as it was about to go backwards out the gate, it dropped its head as to say, "nothing going on here" and slowly walked away. It was kinda cool to see.... ;D

That's a really good looking coyote in your 'hood Mark... y'all must be feeding them good  :D. Most of the 'coyoets' around here are much scrawnier with almost translucent taller ears. In sub. urban Nashville ( 100 yards from my house ) I've seen red tail hawks, barred owls and this year esp. in the snow lots of red foxes....... just haven't seen the elusive bobcat my neighbors talk about yet.

Spanner:

I am pleasantly surprised by the amount of wild life here in the Charlotte  metro area.  The Deer make me a little nuts, particularly leaving the woods with 100,000 saplings to rub their antlers on my Leland Cyprus trees. I have found a egg based deer repellent that is applied to the area keeps the deer from eating every rose bush and flower to nubs.

All but them Fooking tree rats, which have done thousands of $$ of damage to the eves. (well thousands of dollars if I did not do the repair myself...)

in our area, there are 40 homes on 100acres, and no more being built :) the forrested land is owned by the HOA and protected :)
Nice that i cant hear the neighbors. nice that ive got hawks, bald eagles, deer, opossum, porcupine.  Not nice(for the kids and pets) that i've got rabbits coyotes, bobcats and the once-a-year appearance of a black bear.
...but the fat bobcat and the raptors keeps the rabbit population under control.  ;)

deer are a bit out of hand here. My school mascot is the bobcat. but I have never seen one or heard of any in the area. They were all killed out as far as I know, hence the overpopulation of deer.

There was a hawk perched above my motorcycle monday. I only had my phone so pictures suck.

Weve also got lots of possum, skunk, and raccoons. I saw a red fox once too.

Ive never seen a live one but our old husky/wolf mix had a craving for porcupine for some reason.

This isnt him but he showed up several times over the years looking like this

Even cooler to watch fish. I saw one pull what must have been a 10 lb salmon out of the water. He had a hard time gaining altitude but he wasn't going to let go of that fish at any cost.

Here is some of our wildlife too as Bikerbart probably knows up in B'ham.

I wish I had a picture of my dog. But his expression was the same. I guess we got them out too soon. Maybe making him go without food and water for a day might have made the impression on him not to do it. They always put him under to take them out. He was a good dog though.

My first night time emergency call as a vet tech was for an Akita that took on a porky....got real good at pulling quills when I lived at Tahoe. We've got coyotes around here too, and warning signs around the neighborhood occasionally when they come in for a fresh kitty or chihuahua snack or two. Theoretically, any wild animal can be tamed and trained, but it all depends on the trainer and the animal. Used to have an intense interest in falconry and there are no "commercial" outlets for buying a hawk or falcon, a few are bred by other falconers and some taken from the wild. With any wild animal, the most successful "taming" happens with the youngest possible animal, birds right out of the nest, a litter of wolf/coyote/dingo pups or cougar/bobcat/lynx kittens..bear cubs...deer...any "orphaned" youngster where you replace the parent, but it isn't easy and except for a falconer with a permit, usually illegal. I worked with some wildlife rehabbers, and while it is possible and not uncommon to develop a bond with a wild animal, especially orphans, they are still wild and require extreme caution, vigilance, and in some cases protective clothing when handling, kinda like riding a motorcycle on the freeway in rush hour. In some cases, as with the hand raised California Condors, special conditions are created to PREVENT that sort of bonding, so the animal doesn't become dependant on people or "imprinted", a term meaning wild animals "thinking" it's natural to be in the company of people/domestic animals. Imprinted animals usually create a nuisance and end up being destroyed or living in zoos. And once they are rehabbed, the law requires their release into their natural environment. But...I've known people with wolf/dog and coy/dog mixes....and everyone around here calls Australian Cattle Dogs dingos... :D

the particular dog im talking about was mix with husky and wolf. He had some very strange habits. hated being inside the house. Would dig a couple feet down to get under the fence. I would see him miles away from the house while I was on the school bus. My mom got into a shouting match with a neighbor and this dog snuck around the neighbor and bit her leg. We were scared they would put him down but I guess she never reported it.

My mom was always bringing animals home. We nursed a couple owls back to health. (Disgusting animals to clean up after) Raccoons and skunks as well as dozens of cats and dogs.

Thanks, yours was a pretty cool custom job, was it done in the 70'?, with that antique/fade it looks like that era for sure.  I was trying to go for the orange metal flake of the 70's but it came out rather golden, altho I'm not unhappy with it, get a lot of thumbs up on the road (from cars too)!

porcupine has got to be delicious for all that trouble.

I forgot about armadillo. I really only see them as roadkill but a few months ago I got about 6 feet to one before he darted off. I read they used to be pretty popular in native food dishes but I guess its died out.
