Cleaning gas tank (sand?)
« on: April 19, 2011, 10:45:27 AM »
I have what sounds suspiciously like sand in the gas tank of my 75 750K... though it is probably rust. I would like to at least dump whatever this grainy material is out of the tank. I understand there is a lip around the filler hole at the top of the tank, so I'd probably need to remove the petcock. Am I going to need a new gasket if I do this?

Also, should I only use gasoline to rinse it out, or is it okay to use water if I follow immediately with methylated spirits? From what I read that should remove any leftover water.

I'd turn a hose on full blast up in there while shaking and turning. keep going until all that debris is gone.
Try out the filler hole, if the water pressure is good, might suspend the rust and rinse it all out.  maybe then some of THE WORKS toilet bowl cleaner to get the rest of the rust stuck to the tank walls.
Immediately followed by whetever steps you want to take to prevent flash rust.
