Comment on previous posts is that, though they list them as available, they are out of stock and no longer available for them to order from Honda.

Can anyone (SOHC Digger?) confirm that 13011-410-601 is available? If so I'll close this thread...of course we'd all prefer OEM. The assumption (tested true so far) is that you can't get OEM rings anymore from any source other than the occasional eBay.

FYI: I have placed an order with servicehonda.com - we'll see if the thread from 2007 is accurate (no longer available) or if they managed to find some more.

Hey guys,

It's member's efforts like this that causes parts to be made again to support our causes. I hope you guys will get enough orders to have these made and stocked once again. Supporting the effort supports our cause!!

By no means am I trying to discredit his effort. I was simply posing the question as the difference between these custom made ones and OEM ones that I assumed to be available, from a site that I have worked with in the past.

I'm curious because if servicehonda.com doesnt have them, and I pick up the 750F3 Im currently planning to pick up on Sunday, there is a good chance I will be in need of a set of rings. So I may be in on this group buy.

Dave,

Sure didn't mean it that way  ;) Just saying that we've managed to get kits, parts, seats made once again that were long forgotten by the power of our members showing they are willing to commit.

The parts info I posted shows (NOT AVAILABLE) and that means it is generally not available from Honda. Perhaps an individual dealer has some left on their shelves ??

Guess I didn't clarify myself very well. Sorry.

The bold text threw me off Jerry.  :P No worries. If I end needing a set of rings and cant get them anywhere else, this seems great.

@ZanVooden: her ;)

All: I got this reply from servicehonda.com:

Quote
Sorry Sir, I looked into the rings and they are no longer being made.

Thank you.

Mike

Looks like it's the day to think "Joan" is a boy's name. :) In any case, this means the group buy is still on. Please post here if you're in. So far it looks like people want the plain vanilla type - no chrome, no napier step. I'm the only one who wants the bells and whistles ;)

OK everyone - I've placed the order for the 40 non-chromed, non-napier-step rings, by popular agreement. I'll have an equivalent number of oil rings sent as well (20). I expect it'll take a couple of weeks for the rings to arrive.

Once I have a final total on shipping to me, then shipping to you and any tax, I'll post that number here and ask for payment.

I'm trying to find out if Total Seal will sell to you guys directly, rather than the rings having to come here then back to you. I am also going to take my rings to the local chroming shop, so it's probably no trouble to add in some additional rings if others want theirs chromed.

It would be nice if they will ship them to us rather than two shippings.  I would think that this would add $10-$20 to the total.  Would you take paypal for the rings?

Maybe if we came up with a list of who was getting them and forwarded it to Total-Seal they might go for it.

I'm going to help you guys out, since you're helping me get the rings I want, and eat the shipping to me. I will only charge you for shipping to you from me here in Toronto, Canada via Canada Post.

Base price pre-shipping to you is going to be US $189.64/set. If you prepare for about $200 that's probably reasonable.

I'll be PMing people soon to receive payment...once I have the rings in hand and get shipping estimates. If you want to PM me sooner and give me your address, that'd be swell.

Guys, some unfortunate news:

Quote
Joan,
I've run into a speed bump on these. We do not have the tooling to lap these rings to size. This is a much smaller bore size that we usually do and I never thought for a moment about the tooling. The normal tooling cost  for a new bore size is one time charge of $300.00. I would split the cost of this with you, your cost would be a one time  $150.00 tooling cost. Let me know if you wish to proceed.

Spread out across 5 people this is still an extra $30 each. :( Is everyone OK with this? If not I'll eat the cost...still motivated to make this happen...but it'd be nice if you guys agreed to help me out.

To be quite honest, I wasn't really thrilled about the cost to begin with.  Now this guy wants to bump it up so that we'll pay for his tooling?  I'm really thinking that we should all reconsider.  I have seen OEM F2/F3 ring sets show up from time to time on ebay and they don't go for more than $200.  I am sure that everyone could probably proceed with other aspects of their build while they wait for another ring set opportunity.  At $230 for a ring set, I would rather sink that kind of money into an 836cc kit.

Not that I'm in on the deal anymore (I voted "too rich for my blood"), but paying for a business' tooling is like asking somebody to pay for my spray equipment so I can paint their bike. An odd request!?

I agree.  I've been a mechanic for ten years now and I have never seen a customer charged up front when a new tool is needed to perform a job.  New tools are a business investment cost that will pay for itself over time.  I am assuming with this new tooling, producing new rings in the future will cost less for this individual.

I don't see a link to "dave silvers" but if you can provide a link and confirmation for these *exact* rings, let me know.

I've agreed to eat the tool cost for everyone else. Call me a fool but I think it's in the best interest of the group to have an option from Total-Seal, who are known as reliable and a good source.

Don't leave me hangin', fellas. For those of you who step out of the deal, I'll be posting your sets for sale here on the forum at the price you backed out at. For those of you still in, the price still stands.

Here's a link directly to the rings:
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB750F2-(Single-overhead-cam)/part_44312/

We are talking about $123 plus shipping for aftermarket and $161 for OEM.  If they are available through david silvers, I would say that is the way to go.

I have emailed them this morning asking for availability and approximate shipping costs.  I will post any response as soon as I get it.

I asked for availability and shipping costs to Chicago, IL.  Here's the response I received:

Hello

We have pattern OEM rings in stock at 19.00GBP per piston. These are the type with the 3 piece oil ring and can be seen and or ordered from our website.
You will need to select the size that you require Standard, 0.25mm etc

Shipping piston rings for 1 piston by post 5.00GBP ( post can be up to 4 weeks)
Shipping piston rings for 4 piston would be via ups at 17.66GBP ( single set could also be sent by ups 4/5 days)
Please email again if further information is required.

Regards
Gerry

This comes out to about $122.50 for the rings and $28.50 for shipping.

Shoot. I did try and hunt around for all other options before I did this, but I'd found nothing. I've emailed Total Seal to try and cancel the order but, to be honest, they're probably going to throw a fit and not let me out of it. I haven't heard from them in 8 days so I'm hoping either they didn't get to it (they'd said a 4 day turnaround originally).

If he doesn't let me cancel, realize that y'all are sticking me with about $1000 in fees. Makes me pretty unhappy. I also just became jobless so this is especially bad timing...that's the main reason I haven't been particularly motivated to work on the bike recently and why there's been no updates to my build thread.

Joan,
Did you sign a contract with them?  What kind of agreement do you have with them that they can charge you for this when they were still asking for you to pay for tooling?  If they didn't have the tooling, then there is no way they could have manufactured a single ring so I don't see what they can charge you for.  Cancel!  Cancel!  Cancel!  Do they have your credit card number or something?  Even if so, you can cancel the charge.  Let us know what we can do.  We'll stand behind you.

No contract, but a "please go ahead, I'll pay for the tool" email, to which he responded 8 days ago that "any other requests for these rings would go to you instea.d" They have my CC information on file. They had stated 4 days previously to finish the order and ship it, so something's up.

When I asked to cancel the order, I linked them to this thread to show good faith evidence that this is not me pulling a fast one, that there really is another source out there, and that the price is right (and the product is preferable, even, being OEM chromed rings). Heck, if he offered to give me identical chromed rings at the same price as you found and really wants my money, sure, no problem, don't cancel...but that was never on the table.

UPDATE: I got an auto-reply to Keith's email saying he's out of the office on a personal emergency. I am desperately hoping that this sat in his inbox and didn't get looked at as a result. I've sent a follow-up to his 2nd in command, and I expect we won't hear anything until Monday earliest. I will probably try and call them Monday.

P.S. Been feeling under the weather for a few days...checked in the mirror just now, I seem to have tonsilitis :(  Off to the doctor in the morning I go...
