IT'S TIME TO VOTE FOR OUR 2011 RELAY RALLY MASCOT
« on: February 02, 2011, 05:40:04 PM »
Sorry about the delay. The temperature at my home got to -17F the last 2 nights and I lost my internet service.

From what I haved gathered these 6 options are the more favorite suggestions. One vote for each member. You may change your vote should you have a change of heart. The voting will run for 7 days. If we do not have a clear cut winner we may need to have a run off due to large number of options.

There has been much discussion about the merits of each option and the opinions are as varied as our bikes.

DISCUSSION TIME IS OVER. LET THE VOTING BEGIN! May the best mascot win!   ;D

At the conclusion of voting we will immediately begin the process of naming "IT" so start coming up with ideas.

Could there be a "Piston and Banner" option?

Ya know, if the ride banner was left here at....in my garage my place....., we could start here next year and do different route.

I'm just saying..... ;)

P.S. I'm in for a direct $100.00 donation for the banner, mascot, ride log, cost.........what ever that may be.
Great job Jerry, keep it up. 8)

Thanks for the offer Derek....Banner will be free to the club....If we end up with a Piston... I will be happy to engrave it for free also. then the only cost would be the plating. I think that if someone had a weed wacker or a chain saw piston, that would be better than an actual piston from one of our bikes.....just because of the size.....but I am Ok with whatever the majority go for.....the godzilla is alright...but I like the piston idea better.

If it's gonna be a piston, it's gotta be a Sohc4 piston...maybe with a little carbon crust on top...

Derek,

Thanks bro! I have another $100 pledge also. I'm not sure what expenses we will incur but they shouldn't be much. I haven't looked into a log book yet but want to go to an office supply store. I've seen hard cover 8 X 10 binders (non-loose leaf) that might be a good idea. Sturdy and protected by the thicker cover. Keep it inside a big 1LB size zip lock to protect from moisture and dirt. Would probably need a few. May ask madmtnmotors, our kick off rider, to pick up some stuff or we'll have to get things and send to him. Shouldn't be too difficult. If we use Ray's banner someone will need to get a waterproof tube. Ray said something like a 9" X 3" container should work. That's plenty small enough to pack around. A mascot should be soft rubber-like and waterproof on it's own. If we do a piston and rod perhaps something like a soft lens case for a telephoto lens kept inside another baggie. I'd bet i could get Brown's to chrome a piston and rod in a week's time. Maybe I could even talk Ronnie Brown, a fellow Paducahan, into promotional consideration as a sponsor. Lots of things to think about and do just not enough time for a 2011 journey.

As far as a camera goes it only makes sense to have each guy use what he knows, his own camera. Hoping our web development will start taking shape soon and it should. We can then learn how to upload and blog.

This, being our first stab at this, is THE learning year. Next year we can get techie and fancy. We'll have more time once this year is in the books and we've learned a thing or twelve.

I've always thought that a simple log was a good idea and was already figuring on a simple log book to accompany "IT" on "ITs" travels. A basic log book shouldn't be more than a few dollars and if that one gets filled up it can be amended or replaced with another one along the way. I can certainly see to it that there is a simple log book in place at the start. I have also been thinking about a simple tube to stow the banner that could be made of a short length of light gauge PVC pipe and end caps (don't glue both caps!) that could be made for just a couple of bucks. Once we determine that a banner will be used (seems to be a shoe-in, since it's an awesome idea) and I get it in my hands I'll fold and roll the banner to determine the smallest size tube we can get away with, yet still fit the banner easily, without cramming.

The PVC pipe might also accomodate a soft cover ledger (I concur, NOT loose leaf) along with the banner. I'll play that one by ear once I've checked out what's available at the local office supply.

A simple nylon bag that could be strapped to the seat is also a possibilty and might prove to be more versatile. I'll do a little research on what's available along those lines as well.

Each rider should definitely pack their own camera. Lots more pictures that way too!

We're gettin close!

The banner is vinyl and is water proof...and if we use the right marker pen, all signatures will be very permanent. There is NO need for a hard tube to carry it in.  If we are now talking a banner, piston or godzilla, and a logbook, I think that some lightweight soft backpack that could either be WORN (like a school pack), or strapped to a seat, sissybar , or luggage rack. Here is kinda what I'm thinking of.....

This one is open mesh, but they make them in soft nylon that would be waterproof (for the logbook) and be able to carry everything including everyone's personal camera for the photos.  The straps not only seal the bag shut at the top, but are also for the arm in backpack mode, or straps to lash to the bike. These cords are like big bungie tie down cords.

Yeah, I was thinking along those same lines. Lightweight, flexible, durable, inexpensive, ease of carry, although maybe something a little more water resistant (but not entirely waterproof) and perishables (i.e. logbook, camera) could use a gallon size ziploc as Jerry suggested.

A Boat log may do the trick. They have spaces for start times, weather, distance traveled etc for each day and the covers are usually water proof. Might do the trick nicely.

Sounds perfect! I should be able to find it here locally, one advantage to living in proximity to a major metropolitan area (Orlando).

Wasn't the idea with the "mascot", for it to be like the Gnome, you know, so it can be photographed at different places along the route, and with different people to add some light humour to the whole deal  just like the one that went round the world......Going to look silly with a piston ........If you end up with the bikes the banner and the piston, you have 3 things representing the bike and still no mascot or anything identifying with where the bikes are built.....Godzilla stands out because it is entirely Japanese and everyone can identify with it in that sense......A piston is an inanimate object and NOT a mascot....I think the piston also lacks imagination, or maybe some here didn't see or are not familiar with the Gnome story....GO GODZILLA...... ;D

That's exactly what I was suggesting when I first brought up the idea of the relay.  I thought a gnome (or something like it - turned out to be Godzilla) would add a fun element to the ride by snapping pictures of him in front of famous sites and on all the riders' bikes.  But along the way, some started taking the whole thing a little more seriously than I thought it would or should be.  Oh well.  If it ends up being a piston, that's almost as good I guess.  I suppose my opinion doesn't carry much weight seeing as how I won't be able to ride in it this year anyway.   :'(

My original post on this:

Here's something that may be fun...

Do a SOHC4.net relay "race" across North America.  Maybe have a Honda traveling "gnome" (or whatever) and get a picture of him on the seat of a SOHC4 in every state/ provenance (scenic sights of course).  Maybe have a different rider(s) for every state.  At the end of the trip, post up all of the pictures on the forum.  Then have a drawing with everyone who carried him and give him to the lucky winner.  ;D

OK, it may be corny, but it still sounds like fun.  If my bike were up and running, I'd be ready to go!

Lots of good thoughts...........some could be easily combined........the patch and t-shirt design (in includes Godzilla on a CB750) could be a decal and put on the cover of the log book as well as the outside of the tube for the banner...........a Godzilla decal (or 2) would also find a place on the log book, corner of the banner, the tube.......a backpack or whatever........taking a picture while holding up the DECORATED tube in front of famous places (with or without a piston in it) should be easy enough......and its easily inspected at border crossing with other countries.

Just to offer some additional input, another board I belong to (ChopCult) has a campaign called The Brotherhood of the Travelling Lid:

http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1408

The point being is that one helmet travels around the world gathering stickers from wherever it's gone, photos of it being worn by the particular rider at the time showing a location, etc..

Seems like helmet that makes its way throughout the entire journey could be an interesting addition to photos, mascots, etc. I sense though that if you treated it like an automobile bumper and started covering it with stickers, it might look somewhat unrecognizable after several months on the road.
« Last Edit: February 03, 2011, 05:49:34 PM by swellguy »
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.
