So why is a piston such a bad idea as some seem to bring up?  If it was not for that "inanimate object" this relay would not be taking place.  You really don't need to badmouth anyones idea for what should or should not be on the relay.  Let the voting decide what goes.

Who's badmouthing...Poor choice of words. I am pointing out the fact that a piston is not a mascot and that the bike represents itself and so does that banner, so why not have a Mascot that represents the country that made this bike part of history.... ???  With that logic you may as well use a rear wheel spacer, without that you wouldn't go anywhere either...... ???  Go look up mascot.
Geeze some of you lot get offended easily..... ::)

I really think that adding a category of piston, Godzilla and banner together would simplify this whole thing.  At this stage in the voting we have what is known as a pretty close race and conglomerating the popular proposed objects would alleviate any hard feelings.  Personally, I love the idea of a piston AND Godzilla.  No doubt the objects we choose will ultimately be in some sort of satchel.  Boil it down, and "the satchel" becomes the all important object; kind of like "the briefcase" in Pulp Fiction.  What is in it will be secondary.

What is stopping any of us from "adding" to the journey by dropping a token in the satchel?  That being said, what of a small digital camera that can be passed from rider to rider?  It doesn't have to be brand new and I'm sure one of our members has an extra laying around with a decent memory card.  It can be used for pictorial updates along the way.

"Logbook?  Check.  Piston?  Check.  Godzilla?  Check.  Banner?  Check.  Camera?  Check.  Gasoline?  Check.  Hit it!"

How many times does a guy or gal get to go through that kind of list?
"Sure, if you don't want that bike in your backyard, I guess I'll take it."  "I'll probably just scrap it......"

It's not that the piston is necessarily a "bad" idea.  Rather it's that with a little Godzilla, you can have a little more fun with all of the photo opportunities that will present themselves.  Like I said, it's about adding a little levity to the relay by having the funny pictures with the little guy making his way across the continent.  You just don't get the same grin factor with a picture of a hand holding a piston in front of the Empire State Building.   ;D

Who's badmouthing...Poor choice of words.

I don't get it either.  ???  I have the feeling that if Godzilla wins this little poll, that somewhere along the way he'll be mysteriously "lost" in a large body of water or maybe even in the bowels of the Grand Canyon while riding with someone here who voted for the piston.  :D

Badmouthing: To criticize or disparage

"......Going to look silly with a piston ........I think the piston also lacks imagination..."

When you said that, that's where I got the bad mouthing from.  Why put the idea down?

As a slight aside, it might be kind of neat if the ride was able to obtain some sort of traditional kind of Japanese scroll (weatherproofed I guess) signed by representatives of Honda Japan as a token of support, good luck, goodwill, may the good spirits bless your endeavor, etc.

Back on topic(ish) I don't think there's anything wrong with a piston. It tends the be the generic kind starting point for a lot of different cycle and automotive logotypes. I even have one tattooed on my arm. I'm thinking though that it might be too generic for this application. Something more directly tied to the sohc4 factor might be appropriate:

I know this is specific to only one of the motors, I'm just offering it as an example.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

I would agree with your reasoning here Mick.  The piston is redundant and to use another posters term, too generic.  The Godzilla and banner just seem to have more interesting and fun photo opportunities.

Though in my haste to vote I voted for Godzilla.. du-oh...when i meant to vote for Godzilla and Banner.  Any chance of a write in ballot to fix this? ;D ;D ;D

i agree godzilla is a mascot if you are riding along and some one sees you with a piston they will be like of hes just gone and picked up some parts from the scrapper. if you have godzilla on the back of your bike people will actually stop and think about it for a bit or even ask you at a stop light what its about people are curious

Folks, remember the two unofficial rules of the relay:
1) only an SOHC can carry "IT"
2) HAVE FUN!!! :D
Go go Godzilla!
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Going to look silly was in reference to the Gnome appearing at different places around the world , in this context a piston would look silly....Understand now.?
Get over it mate..... ::) You obviously didn't see the gnome story therefore you took everything out of context......Nice informed view dude.... ???

Well, what I truly don't understand is why no one is voting for the gnome AND the banner...it seems generally agreed that the banner is cool, and the majority seem to think that the banner should go with whatever IT is, and some folks have even voted for the gnome...WTF???  is the gnome too good to have a banner tagging along???  will the banner somehow interfere with his gnominess?? why? tell me why? I wanna KNOW!!!!

Godzilla? Piston? Does it matter? I'd carry a fake poop along. I just wanna ride! I do think that Godzilla is more of a "mascot" though. I really think that one of the east coast guys should have just nabbed something out of a neighborhood (like the original gnome story) and we'd have some random mascot. I could nab a ceramic hog from someone here in AR. Ha ha!
