More fun in the shop
« on: February 03, 2011, 04:39:38 PM »
I made an adapter to mount a Kawasaki front disc to my Morris rear wheel. Still need to make some sleeves for the mounting bolts. Looks like the whole set-up will weigh about 14 oz less than the Morris disk!
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks Mick, but I think I'll leave the triples to the real machinists for the time being. ;)
My next project is new rear-sets and foot controls.

Scott, slot it out more you can carve 20 - 30 % off that.. like the disc ears..
Have you considered bicycle speedo (if you run speedo), stock drive is freaking heavy.. it can be replaced with Al bushing.. save some pounds.. gotta get that Seeley under 400 lbs..

Hey Frank, yeah, no speedo already, made a new aluminum spacer a few weeks ago to replace the steel spacer I had used before.
In hindsight, I could have taken more off the ears, but it was a major PITA as it was, with the 7 bolt Kawi pattern. I think I could lose more weight by drilling the steel disc, but since it is already drilled with a "funky" pattern, I have yet to figure out how to lay it out...
The plan now is to get the rear wheel back together, then shift my attention back to the front wheel and brakes. I can take more weight off the Yami slotted discs more easily than the funky Kawi. Already have a roughed out aluminum bearing spacer for the front, but I won't know the weight savings until I compare it to the already lightened steel spacer.
Guessing I'm already below 400 lbs, but I won't know until I put it all together!
Time has become a bit of an issue, too, as come hell or high water, I plan to ride the RELAY!!! ;D

That Kawi pattern wierds me out.. I assume it is balanced.??
Probably done to prevent harmonics... an idea not oft repeated.. ???

How did you compensate for smaller diameter, did you build a swing bracket?

Kawi disc is only slightly smaller in OD than the Morris, maybe 3mm? I think it will work; I may have to modify the Grimeca caliper hanger slightly, worst case.

I found some info about water jet, at the shop where I was trouble-shooting the CNC lathe. Seems this may be the way to go, vs machining, for cutting basic shapes in thick aluminum plate. I'm trying to get a basic CAD program, so I can shoot them a drawing for a quote. They have a minimum charge of $138, but I'm guessing a lot of cutting might be done at that price?
