she's a runner!!
« on: March 28, 2006, 06:21:56 PM »
Got my cb400f going tonight.  Put the carbs back on, and cranked her over.  Started on the first crank!   ;D  I have put a K&N, homemade, in along with a canister from a Ducati 900.  So, I can't remember, should that make it run lean?  Also, a question about smoke.  She is smoking a lot.  Not blue, and not black, just white, but it's very stanky.  I think it smells like rich smoke, but will that cause smoke??  I mean a lot of smoke?  It's definately not oil.  Other than that, she seems great.  I just have to get all that worked out, and get her painted now.  Hooray!  I am very happy.

Check your oil level, make sure it's not too high. True 'white smoke' is generally from a blown head gasket and coolant leaking into the combustion chambers... but that's not something we have to worry about. What do your plugs look like?
No.

I haven't had time to check the plugs yet.  Hope to get to that soon.  It's about 15 miles away, as I have no garage, and ran out of time tonight.  It's not truly "white" smoke, just kinda cloudy.  After reading though some more FAQ's, I reckon it could just be startup smoke.  I didn't have time to actually let it run more than a few minutes tonight.  It was extremely stanky though.  It hasn't been running for a year, so I guess I will let it get good and hot, check the plugs, and report back.   :)

Before you started it...did it have any preservative oil in the cylinders?  It took a little while to burn it out when I dug my bike up in the backyard after Y2K.

And is it firing on all four? If one cylinder was off, that might cause some smoke to come out the back, too. As for it being Stanky, I would have to as about the perservative oil as well. I've seen that as well.

Congrats on it running,
       If the smoke if not blue you are doing well,
  if it hasn't run in months/years, it will take quite a while for all
    the residue to burn off.{and stink}
    Run it long enough to get warmed up, then check for leaks,do a
      safety check head to toe{ya could have missed tightening something
      or a cotter pin somewhere etc.} I have...better safe...
       {see FAQ"s} checklists. and the always good, "oil change".
            Enjoy it!!!!!!!
              Hope it helps
