1977 CB400F Question
« on: February 05, 2011, 08:06:13 PM »

Can anyone tell me the stock rear shock length, eye-to-eye and/or overall?

I checked the FAQ's first and couldn't find an answer.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

12 1/2 center to center, most Honda motorcycles 550 and under are that size...Larry

Yep, very correct.  Kind of makes them look "squatty" at that length too.  I always up to a 13", but that's just me!

Thank you for your responses.

Does going to 13" require a mod to the chain guard?

Shouldn't as it isn't that much of a change, maybe Kanticoy will chime back in as he has done it.  I run stock on all my 400 fours...Larry

Nope, no modification needed.  It just levels the bike out.  Doesn't give it a raked look at all.

The chain guard doesn't fit "fat" shocks. The length doesn't matter, but check the diameter of the stock shock body where it passes the chain guard. There's not much clearance, and the shock is fairly "thin". Basically shocks with longer springs will interfere with the chain guard. Check these for what I mean:
