« on: February 05, 2011, 04:14:56 AM »
hey what was your first car?i had a fully imported vauxhaul velox,it had a 162 cube straight six, manual three speed column shift with syncro first gear, the speedo sweep indicator changed colour from green to yellow to red as you sped up,it had vacuum washers but electric wipers, wood grain on the door interiour top edges and dash, the rear fins incorporated the exteriour opening handle, its an english car, poor drum brakes,i had visions of shoehorning a holden six engine into it,,i thought better and bought a 68 monaro instead.
that "p" on the grille is a license identifier,i was a new driver with a probationary license.

Hey Dave
I had a couple of old Vauxhall Velox's.
I think they were about the 1956 vintage. (The FJ Holden shape)
But the first one was a flat black Austin Westminster and it was luxury.
Had a couple of Morris Minors after that.
I remember paying 60 bucks for the first one - and that was registered ready to go.
It had a side valve motor and the welsh plug at the back of the head started leaking at some stage so I jammed a tennis ball down there between the head and the firewall and it loved it.
I had to replace the tennis ball once.
The other Morry was a panel van with a hot Datsun 1600 motor and side draft Webers.
There was about 2" of ground clearance and we were forever welding bits of plate onto the sump to keep the oil in.
Pete, if your reading this, ask Maxine if she remembers Dave Dunstall.
He's the guy that put the 1600 into the Morris.
Had a ton of fun back then.
If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

Other than the old $25 specials -  Volkswagens we used to get from the junkyard for winter transportation when the bikes were laid up during the winter months the first real car was a 1968 road runner that had a tired 383 and locked 23 spline 833 with the standard 3.23 8 3/4 rear. I got the drivetrain out of wrecked 69.5 Super Bee from my local junkyard (440 six pack - added Racer Brown cam, ported heads, Hooker headers - 18 spline 833 - 4.10 Dana rear).

1968 Ford Cortina GT.  For those of you unfamiliar, it's a British Ford.  Had the same engine(block) as the American Pinto.  Within a month of having it, it threw a rod through the side of the crankcase, and one through the oil pan.

My first car was a 1972 Chevrolet pickup with a Cadillac 6 liter and a turbo 400 transmission. It was a junkyard dog I paid too much for and couldn't fix when it broke(often), but when it ran... Good God! Don't know how I lived through that truck... Or any vehicle I have had since.

My first was a '79 Pontiac Sunbird we got for $350 in the early '90s.  I spent several months taking the interior apart and putting new carpet back in it (including the roof) , painting the trim, and saved up money to have it painted black.  I thought it was some hot $h!t back then.  Had to re-attach the muffler a few times.  It blew a freeze plug the next winter and I moved up to a '76 Nova, complete with the 305, rusted out wheel wells, and a passenger door that didn't open.  Of course I found a set of Cragar 5 star SS rims (10" rears, 6" front) and jacked up the rear with air shocks that leaked a little.  That's the one that almost killed me a few times...

1957 Ford Fairlane 500 292V8 with three speed on the floor.  A real boat that I thought was a drag car.  Went through clutches like pez but I won some trophies at Greer Drag Strip in South Carolina during high school and college. P/stock. White with a new black interior.  The back seat was as wide as a twin bed.  In 1969 I had an 8-track tape player with a reverb unit.  Sold it and bought a 1961 Thunderbird with a 390 and all the options.  Black with a white leather interior that a friend redid for me..  Sold that to pay for senior year of college.  Wish I had that T-bird back

Ah yes, the year was 1971 and I picked up this 1969 GTO 400 cubes / 4 barrel muscle car. Gas was only like 32 cents a gallon. Took me through high school and college. Then I blew a ring so rebuilt the engine from the block up. Re-worked the interior and had it repainted and replaced the weathered vinyl top. Took it to shows and kept it inside during the WI winters. Sold it in early 1990's to a collector for like $9,000. Had matching numbers which was a must. Would have liked to keep it, but a wife and 2 kids the priorities had to change.

johnie I have 6 kids; 4 in college right now. the GTO is a better investment.  And you can drive it away and park it elsewhere and it does not come home  like a stray cat.  Around our dinnertable a fillup is pretty expensive.

1971 Chevy Vega. Lasted me 8 mnths before I parked it alongside the street and walked away from it. One cylinder smoked, the tranny bearings were squealing and rumbling, it had rust around every window. I don't think I've seen one in a long time, since they rusted where they stood. Come to think of it every GM product I've ever owned was a complete POS.

1977 Ford Granada.

Known as Granny's thunder because it backfired so loud you'd think there was a gun fight behind you. It was only improved when the muffler unwrapped itself after a particularly loud BANG will cruising down town.

The kicker was the "I heart Jesus" sticker my grandma had put in the window. That's right. Not only was it loud and raucous but my grandma drove it for 25+ years.

Looks like granny kept it in very good shape! Most of those old Granada's disappeared with the Pinto's & Vega's of the 70's.

This isn't a pic of my car but it looks exactly like it, right done to the spinner wheel covers. '66 Mustang, 289ci, 3spd. manual on the floor. I think I paid $700 for it in '71. Now that I look at it closely it's missing the chrome "intake" at the back of the side swoop in front of the rear wheel.

han 14" tire all around except the left front
that was a 15" tire cause the suspension was broke
had a power rear window
couldn't use it because the car would die if you tried
but what do you want for $50
still washed it and waxed it every week

Mine was a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. Bought it from a family friend for $100.
It had a V-8 and was yellow, but did not look as good as good as this one!

like that one but tan with a white stripe. 383/auto. Swapped in a floor shift console from a '64 to get rid of those damn buttons. (remember keyboard-o-matic?) Took forever to find the dash piece from a 3-on-the-tree car to get rid of the holes.

Took my drive test in that car.

Paid $25 for it.

The original owner had it for 14 years and I've had it for 33.
