My first car was a 1980 Chevy Camaro Rally Sport in Red/Black. I wish I still had it.  But kids came along and it was traded for a Ford Granada 4-door (ugh) - possibly my worst vehicle purchase ever.

My old man also had a 79? Gremlin. That was actually the first car I drove at age 13 out in the yard. It was supposed to last long enough to be my first car, but well, it was a Gremlin haha.

1979 Mustang fastback, 5.0L, 4-speed. Rust everywhere, drank gas (and leaked it too), problems on top of problems, but she always started first try and was a blast to drive. Sold it and got a 1980 VW Rabbit diesel. Talk about going from one power extreme to the other.  :D :D

Wife and I had a 84 VW Rabbit diesel.  53hp I beleive.  Start off in 1st gear move about 10 feet shift into 2nd.  Like driving a 16 speed semi fully loaded.  Great fuel economy though.   ;)

1956 chevy, it had no engine so I had to build one myself. A 265ci power pack. My brother, dad and my brothers buddy that had a race car all helped. Someone got a bearing insert in wrong and it wouldn't start. We put a booster from a wrecker on it and it finally did turn over. That bearing didn't fail until after I sold it. It had a 3 speed automatic and at a certain speed it would shift up and down repeatedly.
I worked at our local McDonalds, there were 4 of us that had black and white 55,56,57 chevys. When we all worked at the same time the back parking lot looked like a vintage highway patrol convention!

57 Chevy 150 coupe. straight 6, 3 on the tree. 42K original miles. Dad signed it over to me when i was 6 to avoid a luxury tax (he owned 9 cars at the time). She's been mine ever since, but ive never driven it. Perfect interior, a few minor dents and dings... hasnt been started since i was 2. but the best part is, since it was handed down through the family since new. i am legally the original owner   8)

First car I bought, 1958 Olds.
First car I wrecked, too. It took a week for me to change it from a nice car to a literal beater.  Still ran reliably and pretty fast, too, as long a turning, and stopping wasn't quickly needed.  It was a very tough car, and I wasn't particularly nice to it.  I actually bought another 58 with no engine and trans to transplant the engine from this into it.
But, then I happened to find the 55 Chev.  327, 4 barrel carb with a 3 speed, Metallic green paint and reupholstered black interior.  It was a really fast car for its day.  Kept blowing rear ends after bad wheel hop, though.  The nice shaved and bull nosed hood flew off at 70 MPH when the hood latch failed.
Found some 4.56 gears for it.  Quick little car.  Kept wearing out rear tires.  Kinda wish I didn't sell that one.

Had to have a convertible.  61 ford with a 352 big block 2 bl, and a three speed manual.  Nice, but just not fast enough.
So, I found the 57 Plymouth with no engine and trans, and then stuffed a 392 hemi with its push button torque flight from the 58 DeSoto (you can see in the background of the first pic).
That one was a real sleeper and surprised more than a few GTO and Chevelle drivers who thought their cars were hot stuff.  No problem pegging the speedometer.  Small problem steering the thing at that speed, though.  OK, if you just wanted to go straight.  ;D

Lot's of stories for these cars.  Pictures taken in Roselle, Il.

A Cameo White with black vinyl top '72 Pontiac Grand Prix. Black interior with crager ss's. 400 4 bbl. Turbo 400 w/shift kit out of a 69 GTO. I miss it still. It was a head turner. Totalled out in $&%*'N snow in '78.
Not my first, but one of several $150 cars..in '85, bought a '74 Grand Prix Model SJ, black on black, 455/T400, sunroof, US Mags all around...I think one of my all time favorite cars...

Everybody I knew who owned one back in the day liked 'em.
Wish I could've owned one of the hotter early ones. I liked em
all tho, all the way to '77, but the 69-70's were my fav. Nice choice sir.
The black ones were cool.

1963 Karmann Ghia when I was 18.  The gas pedal would stick while driving it and I would have to keep tapping it in order to un-stick it.  While showing the car to my co-workers, I got in and started it.  The pedal immediately got stuck and I let off the clutch causing the car to jump the curb and smash in to the wall.  Then a couple of months later while parked in my parents’ driveway, someone rear ended it.   I drove around with it in this condition for a while until one night while cruising (yes, cruising) I saw a friend who had started doing auto body and offered to repair it very cheap.  He did a magnificent job and I drove it around for a while more until one day while in the twisties and listing to “Hey You” by the Scorpions, I went into a turn a little too hot, slid over to the next lane and ended up hitting the side of a mountain.  Retrieved the battery which was resting about 5 feet up the hill, pulled the fender far enough away from the tire so that it wouldn’t rub and drove it home.  Had it parked in front of parents’ house again, but this time with a For Sale sign on it.  Got a call from a girl with a very familiar name and voice who came down to see it, only to find out that she was my girlfriend from when I was like 13.  She took the car, I took the cash and I never saw her or the car again.  I still think about her…..the car that is.

I have a 69 Ghia now.

My first car car was a 74 Super Beetle.  It started a life long love of old VW's, and it made me never want a "fat chick" bug (thats what we call super beetles and bay window busses in the VW world) ever again.  Since that time I have never gone without an aircooled VW.

1978 EX cop car Impala for 600 bones. bought it when i was 16 from some mexican dude who lived in a bad neighborhood and treated the car like gold. he said he did an oil change once a month, first pouring a bottle in with the drainplug out, "just to get any sediment". had a killswitch in it and everything. my pops had been an upholsterer for the last 40 years showed me how to remove the rear seat foam, we stuffed it with goose down. girls seemed to like it. subs under the seat and in the trunk... they liked that too ::). took about 2 lifetimes for the car to hit 60 but i tried to get a race out of every stop light. shift kit and 300 bucks into the exhaust and the 305 roared. gas was only a buck25 so getting everyone in my car was a sure way to cruise around all weekend without braking the bank. south elgin illinois has a wicked hill with some tracks at the top. me and 5 friends packed into the car, up the hill at about 50 and over the tracks. the second we were in the air felt like an eternity before the car bottomed out and i needed more exhaust work. it had a problem doing burnouts, so i had other ways of spinning the tires, and after a neutral drop from 4500 i blew the trans. ive seen someone else driving the car around these days, but ill always love my 600 dollar jalopy.
Wake up, look up, there's a warmth up there
a reminder of peace, a reason to care.
