cb350F triple tree replacements
« on: February 05, 2011, 09:25:59 AM »
I have a '73 cb350F with a broken upper triple tree clamp. Seems to be a common problem and replacements are hard to find. My question is are there other triple trees that will work with the 350F's frame and wheel spacing?

Use the 350F clamp only.  The 400f clamp is different.  Same fork tube diameter and fork tube spacing, but the two bikes have different gauge mount locations.

hmmm.  I honesty didn't think it would fit (at all).  I have a 400F top clamp in my garage.  I should check it out again and make sure it's actually what I think it is...

huh, yeah it does fit...  I always thought the steering stem was too big   ???

I'll take you up on that offer: I have a friend with a CNC who would like to get into making billet parts for bikes. There are billet top trees for many of the big sportbikes, selling for $80-$500, depending on fancy. I wish to make one billet top tree with 2 alternate mount holes so it can fit both the 400F and 350F, so it has a shot at the market. It needs to sell about 4 per year to make it, so the costs can be recovered in a reasonable time. After typically 10 units, the costs are covered and the money man is paid back: after that it's a viable 'product'. It went like that with several other products I've developed with other folks, some motorcycle, some not. This one might take a little longer, as there is no "market" to sell into, it just has to spread around by the need. But, there are not a lot of these tree tops around, and they break for lack of proper tightening, so that gives an opening for a superior, wrench-proof version to appear. :)

The guy who measured it up for me promptly quit working at our shop, wnet off to another where they work him night & day. He's lost interest now, I think. I'll have to start over with the CMM work, I guess. :(

I've been so busy with engine rebuilds this year that I've had a hard time keeping up on Transistor Ignitions, hard time getting my favorite R&D projects in line. Maybe I need to retire and work on just bikes?

HM, why don't you check with TTR400?  He's got some great CAD files for 350f and 400f upper triples that are ready to go.  He might be able to steer you in the right direction, or he might just be the right guy to make them for you if he has time.  I have a 350f billet upper from him in my garage that has the correct vertical offset in addition to all the other dimension (most people miss don't do a good job with vertical spacing on these 350Fs.  I'm very impressed with it!

I'll do that! If he's already making them in the right height, maybe I won't worry with it. The only ones I have seen before this were too low, not made right.

If you have the drawing or the old top clamp, broken or not, it could be made.  We have done it for 750 so a 350 could be done.  It won't look like Honda's part but would have the same clamping dimensions.  Can you say billet?  PM me and we can exchange info.  $500 for a complete triple with steering stem.  It would, of course, be less for top only.   Making at least 5 top clamps could reduce cost.

You need the 350 or 400?  We were tossing around the idea of making a small run of them when the cnc's get up to speed.   They are finally hooked up but need tuning.

There is a place than makes the 350 top triples but they're are quite proud of them because they look so ($400) nice.

Look for a thread on this subject in high performance and racing and you will find a link to the people who offer them and pictures of the product.

Or wait and see if a run of them get made elsewhere. We were hoping that getting a prototype closer to $200 would generate a demand.
