question about Honda Del Sol inner CV joint
« on: February 07, 2011, 07:15:14 PM »
Hey guys, I have a question that some of you clowns may be able to answer about my sweet 1994 Honda Del Sol. I got a torn inner CV boot on the driver's side (I think because of bad alignment and a bad ball joint on the outer tie-rod which got fixed). The inner CV joint appears so far to be fairly clean and not horribly worn and was not making any clacking noises a bad CV joint makes- still has some grease in there.

Well, I got the drive axle off but could find no evidence of the intermediate shaft which Haynes spoke of and I accidentally pulled the shaft and the tripot bearing assemble out of the outer race without putting alignment marks on both.

Will this cause problems if after I clean it up and don't find manufacturer alignment marks and put it back together in the non-previous alignment? (66.666% probability)

Thanks for any help on this problem.

Lack of a car payment.

'96 Nissan truck and '94 Honda Del Sol- both run like tops and are super cheap on insurance and property taxes.

A little elbow grease every now and then keeps 'em running like clockwork.

I did that in my mazda and since it already needed an alignment, I never noticed anything. yes I know that does not help! I just had to say it ;D
Anyways, I doubt it will make a difference as far as alignment goes. Get a new boot and some moly lube for cv joints and pack it in. Clean as much old stuff out as you can. The dirt in it will grind things up over time.

I cleaned the tripot and outer race and there was a decent amount of lube still in there and pretty much zero dirt or other contaminants. No scoring or shavings in there either- pretty damn clean so I think I'll pack the grease and the boot and stuff it back in.

Now this 10 degrees Fahrenheit #$%* is something else I will have to fight whilst putting it all back on...  ::)

NOW I feel sorry for you! Doing the work is made immeasurably worse when you gotta sit on the cold ground to do it.

Meh, I am thinking about waiting until the weekend to button it back together, it will get in the 40's here this weekend.

Very tempting. I have to pull my car door apart to fix the door linkage. new years we had freezing rain and for some reason, when I tried opening the door, something popped off inside.
I feel real ghetto having to reach out my window to open my door! :D

IMO if any dirt was in there, just buy a new axle, they're pretty cheap these days most everywhere, specially if you have the core for it. new boot will be good, but any dirt that was in there has already started to wear stuff out. Boot will work, but do you want to do it again down the road a bit when it does start clunking? I wouldn't do a boot kit on my own car (i'm an auto mechanic) because it takes a bit more work, and you're just putting the old (already contaminated by dirt!) parts back in. But yeah, when you put it in it'll take a little push pull motion to get it to pop back into place, not that hard standing up, on the ground may take a little more sonofabi*ching to get in. Good luck!
