Head cover removal for CB 750
« on: March 23, 2011, 06:55:49 am »
I need to remove the head cover (not head) of my 1977 CB 750. Can I do that with the engine in the frame? At this point I have no intentions to remove the head, just have a bad seal where the tach connects and also want to take a look at the cam, since I just picked up the bike and it has 37,000 mls on the clock. Thanks.

Photolar is correct.

That tach drive seal can be replaced from the outside, and...your cam is OK.   :)  Honestly, the cam is good for 100,000+.  I would pull the little tappet adjuster screws and check them for pitting, or wear.  They do wear and make it difficult to get a good valve adjustment reading.

Ok great, that saves me some work  :) Allthough I really wanted to take a look inside....Are there good instructions somewhere on how to check the cam chain tension and/or how to adjust it?

Plenty, either Google the Internet or Search this site. Hint: go to "Home" on the blue forum menu bar first. Then search CB750 cam chain tension, or somesuch.  Also there is a link to download manuals, and its covered there. I'd tell you but gotta sign off for a while.
