Anyone have RAASK rear sets on a 550 F?
« on: March 17, 2006, 05:17:13 AM »
Just seeing if anyone already has RAASK rear sets on there 550 F.  I'm considering getting a set but would like to know how they look on the 550 and if they block the kickstarter.  The kickstarter comes out pretty far and with the folding pegs on the RAASK models it should clear.  If you have them please send or post pics.

Thanks
Chris

I've got them on my 750F. I could post some pics if that helps. The kickstart lever will hit the brake pedal on mine if you run it all the through.

If you could post pics that would be great.  Do you know if there is anyway to move the brake pedal?  I want the rear sets but would hate to loose the kick starter.  Kind of a nice thing to have :)

I've got Raask's on my 550 (1974, I don't know if that makes it an F or K).

They're nice, but you WILL lose the kick start. There's no way around it since the mounting bracket that shifts the pegs and controls back goes right in front of the kick.

So basically, you can't even pull / swing the kick starter out?

Same motor's between the 2 bikes, just some minor frame differences.  Can you post pics or email to listo@comcast.net

Thanks

You can still swing the kick out IIRC, but that's pretty much as far as it will go.

I'll take some pics and post them for you this weekend.

No problem.

The seat is from airtech. It's a Bates3, and IIRC it was about $150. I need to upholster it though. Right now it just has stick-on foam, and it's a butt bruiser.

Wow, that is pretty close.  I guess from the pics that you can only use the kick about 1/2 way which wouldn't be enough at all.  And at least on a K model there pretty much no way of machining the brake lever.  I'll guess I'll order them and see what happens.  I know the F and K models are 2 different part numbers so who knows.  At least my start works pretty well.

Anyone with 550 F's with the RAASk's out there?

Thanks for the pics.

Just was looking again at those pics.  There may be a way to modify the brake linkage and use a cotter pin and washer to connect to the brake lever.  That way if you need the kick starter you could pull the pin and the brake lever would swing down out of the way.  Once the bike is running you could just swing the brake lever up and reconnect the washer/cotter pin and your on your way.  What do you guy think of that option.  Would it work?  Haven't seen a set of these in person so I really don't know how the connection is made.

I built a Yoshimura based 590 using a set of 550 cases, for a friend and he had a set of Raask rear sets on it. He was quite happy. If i remember correctly, he mostly ran it with no k/s fitted, but I seem to remember it being on once or twice and no rel problems w/kick starting it.......

That's an interesting idea though any type of clevis pin or cotter pin set up would introduce some slop at the joint.

I don't know about your kick start, but in that picture where the k/s is making contact with the brake pedal is right where the k/s engages.

The cotter pin idea is an interesting though, although you'd have to machine the black Raask bracket for clearance, since at the moment of contact between the k/s and brake pedal, the k/s and Raask bracket also make contact (in the last picture)

I guess I'll have to see once I have them in hand.  Don't mind having to grind off alittle of the RAASK bracket forward of the mounting bolt.

Something can be done.

chris - we had that in another thread. while i insisted with raask rear sets you'll lose the kicker, Geeto67 made an interesting point. if you modify your stock item to a foldable peg-ish assembly it should work. if you leave the main lever in 'fold in' position, you got just enough clearance to get between base bracket and brake linkage. still don't know if that gives you enough travel to get the thing started though...

rt,

Aren't the RAASK pegs foldable already?  From looking at the pics in this thread, they do flip up.  You talking about something else?

I took the plunge and ordered the RAASK's today.  Should see them in about 2wks per Omar.  I'll report on kickstart with F models.  When talking to Ed from Omar's he said that on some models the kickstart is not interupted but on models that it is there are directions on how to "bend" the kickstart lever for clearence.

We'll see.

Chris - my Raask assembly is a 'static-straight-bolt-on-no-way-foldable-peg-unless-you-hammer-or-blowtorch-it-job'  ;D . What I was referring to was the upper part of the Kicker itself - instead of folding the whole thing out, leave the main part in situ and convert the 'footy' part to a foldable or 'flip-out-ish' design...

rt,

Didn't really understand what you were talking about :)  Were you saying the actually foot pegs on your RAASKS don't fold up and are in a locked?? position always out?

Do you have pics of the RAASks on your 550F?

Thanks

yep Chris - on my Raask set the foot pegs are indeed static... I've seen that before on other bikes, so I suggest that's no 'aftermarket innovation'.

Take a look at the pics and you'll know what I mean....

If you are able to fold them pegs up, it's a completely different matter and leaves plenty of room for other solutions.

Cheers and success,
Ray

Ray,

Thanks for the pics.  I actually emailed Sivert Raask this morning to ask him and he said all new rear sets for all models have folding pegs.  You must have an earlier generation rear set.  Somthing can always be made to work I suppose.  We'll see when I get them.

Discovolante makes 'em too. Discovolantemoto.com. Works on my 750, but ya gotta fold the footpeg and remove the peg from the brake lever. Works in a pinch, but not for everyday.
