I just don't know about enforcing speed limits by aircraft
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:56:00 AM »
Check out what this concerned citizen has to say!

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I think a helicopter matching your speed is approaching fair..

with an Aircraft, I would be tempted to fight it and ask (in court)to be shown, how the difference in their viewing angle , is factored in, as well as the speed difference, and what the effect of those are on the accuracy of the speed they measured you at....just saying..
They should be have to be able to provide you with their speed, and height difference, to present a fair calculation.

Ok , I am back now.. that only took 17 minutes for it to recover..

Perhaps I am presenting a flawed argument, but what are they usibng for timing in the aircraft?.. A MADE IN cHINA STOPWATCH..?

Not much of it done around here, but perhaps they time you through some marks on the highway.

I've seen roads with lines painted across them in AZ. There were signs saying something about aerial radar surveillance. I looked around for a chopper, didn't see one, and got back in the throttle...

Frank, The gauges for measuring their speed are a lot more accurate than a speedo in a car and if they are flying over head at the same speed then its not hard to prove how fast you were going, the angles have nothing to do with it at all, they simply fly at the same speed over head .

That's exactly how it's done.  Lines on the highway, usually on the side of the road.  All it takes is a stopwatch and a calculator.

Rate (speed)  =  distance / time.

Marks on the highway at a known distance will give us your speed using the time it takes to get from one mark to another.   We do it often in Wisconsin.

We can do it from our squads too using an installed VASCAR unit.

I realize that it is a timed  over as set distance method. A stopwatch, though, is an ancient method , that is lowtech by todays standards. The accuracy of the test can be influenced by fluctuations of the reaction times of the person doing the timing.
So the question I have (could be brought up in court), is what is the range if reaction times in the person that is timing. Its commonplace for dragracers to be aware of their reaction times, and consistency thereof.. what I want to know, is the law enforment timer, being tested and documented, regarding their reaction times.

It is a fraud. they are counting on the Cop in the air clicking the watch at precisely the correct time. It has been proven very inaccurate and defeated in court many times. It is really not possible for an aircraft fixed wing or rotary to pace a vehicle on the ground with any accuracy.

They're not pacing the vehicle with the airplane Bobby, they're flying overhead timing your movement between fixed distance markers on the pavement.  Right? That's how I understand it.  :-\

The argument could be made that the lag time between the car crossing the line and the cop hitting the stopwatch button is the same, start and stop.

Which is cheaper when you get a speeding ticket, pay it or try to fight it in court.?... unfortunately option A is less costly......... so, your caught by the b#ll$ and 'they' know it.... easy money/ tax collection IMO ( opinion based on Europe, but prolly' valid here also ! ).

Thats a good point Spanner, they should make it free to challenge speeding tickets. I highly doubt that would ever happen but it sure would even things up a bit..... ;)
