Is there something I'm missing?
« on: February 10, 2011, 02:44:50 PM »
I tried to remove my lower forks from the upper tubes on my 1971 cb750.  I first removed the front wheel then removed the 6mm hex bolt from the bottom , it let them slide down about an inch but I can not get them off......  Any ideas?

Sounds like your not taking the fork tube out of the tree's?? Anyway make sure the big cap nut is off at the top and the spring is out and use the fork lower like a slide hammer it will come off. You may need a broom handle or something to re-tighten that small bolt at the bottom of your fork when putting back together. Sometimes need one to get it out.

On a 71, K1? I think they are held on by the circlip above the seal. In fact it is recommended that you do not remove the allen in the bottom of the lower leg. Has nothing to do with getting the lower leg off.

Gotta remov the tubes from the triple clamps, then I'd drain them thrugh the top pour iy out, remove the spring, then remove the circlip above the seal. Then hold the top tube in one hand, the lower leg in the other, collapse the two together and vigorously "pop" them apart. Be prepared for an unholy mess of oil and goo. Pop them apart outside if possible and don't wear your Sunday best.

The K0, K1, and maybe early K2 were completely different than the later ones.

OCICBW but I don't think so.

Whoops for about the clip but thought he probably knew that one-good call, and I think the 2 small bolts need to come out for disassembly, always take 'em out on the ones I have done.
