need someone good to paint my tank and side covers

I live just outside of Scranton pa. I was just wondering if anyone close knows anybody good for painting?

DIY!

Tricks and tips sections  has a few very helpful  threads with photos and instructions., I can't find the one I was loking for, but lots of info there.

You need to find a fuel resistant two part clear for the tank.

I was thinking of doing it myself but I want it to come out real nice and I have never tried painting before.  I would love to do it myself I just lack the confidence.

This is the only clear that you should use that comes in an aresol. It is true 2K clear that would be equivalent to any high quality body shop clear.

It has UV and chemical (including gasoline) resistance.

Be sure to brush (with a littel art brush) some clear around the filler neck after you unmask the tank. You don't want any gas to creap in under the edge of clear that the masking tape leaves.

Take some scrap metal as tree fiddy suggests and try DIY!

Yeah. I'ver heard of that welded seam that holds the gas cap being the place where a paint-job fails.

I think one thread said use a bit of epoxy to fill in the seam around the filler collar or your paint will fail there.

I have heard of epoxy too.
A friend of mine built a chopper and tried epoxy (even after I suggested 2K clear)... and it failed -- sad day since it was a custom paint job.

I used some catalyzed clear and a small brush on my custom paint job and it never has failed.

This doesn't mean that epoxy will fail, it's just my own personal experience.

After painting my tank and removing the masking around the fill neck I also applied clear epoxy over the "joint". Only been a year but have had some gas spill over and so far so good.

There are basically two types of filler and you mask them differently, but for tanks with a raised neck and cap atop it what you do is mask the top, but not the sides.  You leave the top of the filler tube, the part that the cap gasket rubs on, bare metal when the job is complete.  Your paint job begins immediately after the gasket.  Don't extend the primer, base, or clear over the top.  What you do when you paint that type is immediately after shooting the last coat of clear you pull that tape.  I mean immediately.  What happens is the final coat of clean then flows down across the layer from the earlier coat that the tape line cut and seals it.  Its outside of the gasketed area so gas can't get to it.  If you let the paint end under the cap the gasket will rub through it pretty quickly and then the gas fumes will attack the paint and cause it to lift.  Once that starts you're screwed.

The other type of cap is the recessed sort.  You tape them essentially the same way, but what you do is tape the entire top and then take a razor and trim it back to the outside of the bulge which is the sealing ring.  With these you can leave the tape after the last clear if you like.  I think somewhere I might still have some photos of how to tape the two different types of fillers if you need to see it to visualize it.

Anyway, after you've painted a few and lost a few due to your own taping mistakes it sinks in how to do it right.  All I'm trying to do is save you the grief and expense of doing it the wrong way.

Good tip about the filler neck.

As to the reason the epoxy fails.  Epoxy will not stand up to long exposure to UV and will fail unless protected by a paint coating.
