Alright, so now some not-so depressing chit-chat. I had a few questions that I wanted to raise.

-Has anyone every removed the key-ignition switch completely? I know someone who just put an push-button, on-off switch where the keyed switch was wired into, and stashed the switched in an inconspicuous location. Thoughts/concerns?

-With a small enough canister (perhaps even custom), could a person mount an underbody exhuast? Think Buell I guess, just curious because...

-I could get a cb550 (or is it 500) for free, but am not sure if it would be worth it. It is sitting in a junkyard, and the engine is seized. Now, I think I would enjoy completely tearing apart another bike like this (I have a 750 k6 right now), but how do you know when a bike is hopeless? At what point do you throw in the towel and say "there is no hope for you my friend."?

-Is anyone in the midwest planning on going to Rockerbox this year? How about the Slimey Crud Run? I would love to finally meet some fellow, old-crappy bike enthusiasts.

when i got my 71 it had a flip/flop switch instead of an keyed ignition - though i never had any trouble with it, the setup made me nervous just in case someone might notice it and decide to ride off on my baby...

swapped it out for a new ign....the bike's PO was out in rural TN so he never had to worry about such big-city concerns. sigh.

with that switch and a push-button electric start it was two-touch-fire! i actually liked it, saved the switch and will go back to it when i move to some out-of-the-way place one day.

I'll be riding in the fall Crud Run, was going to go to the may one, but I live in Michigan, and it is outrageously expensive to cross the lake on the ferry, ($200!!!) and I spent my monthly allowance on CB400 parts!

I don't have a key switch...I've got a toggle switch for ig and one for lights...when I park it at wal-mart, I use a pad lock on my front brake disc...If someone wants your bike from a parking lot, they are going to take it weither it's got a key switch or not...sohc key switchs are easy to hot wire, right there in a wal-mart parking lot...of cource...this is just my opinion

well internet arguments are fun and everything, but i STILL think that an ingition flip switch is a bad idea - then any moron, even a casual, non-bike riding, not-out-to-steal-a-motorcycle-today, got-no-truck-or-any-other-form-of-transportation-either-i'm-just-14, kind of moron can get on your bike, turn it on ride it 10 feet-or-if-i'm-lucky-or-have-a-little-experience out of the parking lot and on to the road before hitting someone or something and then whose insurance pays for that (and then who's the moron?)

Chris, as far as whether or not to take a free bike (because of the condition), I have several in that condition. The thing is, you can possibly build something out of it, you can put it aside to use for parts should you manage to pick up on another one or you might be able to do a little trading for partial payment on another bike. Never, I say Never turn down a free bike. My wife wishes I would but (so far) it hasn't happened. I'm prone to pick up on old bikes like some people pick up stray dogs.

I think you should also talk with ProTeal about switches. He has a pretty decent arrangement on his bike. Maybe he'll see this and clue in on his setup. That's all I've got. Later on, Bill

I am thinking off diching the ignition switch on my project, the switch is stuffed anyway. I was thinking of a hidden toggle switch and don't mind being called a moron

If you can obtain and follow a wiring diagram for your particular bike,you can put in any type of switch or lock that you want.You can mount it anywhere you want if you have enough wire to reach where you want it located.If you really want to get trick with modern technology,you can make it remote. If you just want a simple solution,you can wait for someone here to spell it out for you but I'm not that dude!

If you can get a free bike and don't know if it is worth if you get it for free.....WTF?

GET THAT BIKE!!!!!! Get a manual....start working on it or.....if you have a bunch of bucks....have some qualified friend or shop work on it.If you want a free ride.......put on your seat belt cause its probably gonna be a bumpy ride!!!!

Well Mr.Breeze, perhaps you should reread my initial post, then reread your last one, and then maybe you will realize that I never said anything about rewiring, or asking for help. I simply wanted some "thoughts/concerns" on the idea. But thank you for your unnecessary unhappiness. $:-\$

Sorry for being Richard Cranium but I just like to see people figure the basics out on their own.If you get a free scoot,take advantage and tear into it.If you get stuck,check the book.If you don't have the book,get one.If you want to do something different like modifying the ignition switch,get on with it.You know?.... Don't mean to sidetrack the post, but with all the talk of security... I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with some sort of radio controlled ignition cut off. Here in North Philly (pretty ghetto), I'm kinda concerned that when I finish my cafe, it'll be an attractive prize to thieves in the area (no garage at my place). I don't really want to have to keep it at the garage I'm doing the work in - about 4 blocks away.

I was thinking about doing some sort of proximity switch, like my parents have on their Prius - an electronic key that I keep in my pocket that will cut all power if I'm more than a few feet away. I'll be using rotor locks, steering lock, and I'll probably sink an anchor for a chain at my place, but I'd like something a little.... more.

Back to your original questions about the ignition switch and exhaust cannister...

Here is what I've done on my 400F. I thought about just using a toggle switch, but I couldn't give up the security of a key. I found this universal ignition switch at Auto Zone for $5.99. You can see it at the top left of the sidecover. It incorporates the starter, so I don't have the button anymore. I also got a Supertrapp weld-on spark arrestor and mated that up to a Kerker header on the bike. It seems to weigh about 1000 lbs less than the stock setup, and you can tune in the right amout of backpressure. I'm still working on tuning it in, but I like the way it looks and sounds.

Man, I thought I was on the Craig's List motorcycle forum for a minute. I like tsflstb's ignition switch solution, neat and cheap.
