Motor Frame swaps
« on: February 07, 2011, 01:01:58 AM »
G'day all.  ;D  My first post here. I have a '73 cb500 I've just picked up. Intend to do a cafe project with it.

Ive tried the search function, but no luck with my query. I'd like to know what motors(if any) can be swapped between frames.
Is a 550 a straight fit into a 500 frame. Or even a 650 or 750.

This is my first involvement with sohc Hondas, so on a big learning curve.

the 550 will go straight in,they are more or less just a bigger bore motor with clutch and gear shift improvments.

If you are looking for the most hp, you get the most poop from the 650 which was produced well up into the eighties as a sohc. It will fit where you want it to.

Maybe I'm wrong...

It will fit, but to get it into the frame you'll have to remove the sump pan and negotiate the primary tensioner over the frame rail, or remove it as well--on the 650, the lower right frame rail unbolts for clearance. This I've done in mockup, but I haven't gone any further. It's pretty tight over the valve covers too--I don't think I could get the head off while it's in the frame any more. Maybe, I haven't tried it.

Thanks for the feedback guys. My idea was to have a motor on the side to build up into something nicely warmed over while still riding the bike. Think I'll keep my eyes open for a 550. Got a big swap meet next month, so just maybe... ;)

if you are buying a second motor, buy a 650.  They will bolt straight into the 500 frame.

Seems to be a bazillion of them around here.   Lots of parts on e-bay.

what date is the maleny swap meet?ive use gilberts head reconditioners in sth/port for car and bike head work and also precision engine reconditioners also in sth/port,the 650 is a rarer bike here,i subscribe to just bikes and have only seen one for sale,12 grand, engine bits like loose heads/carbs etc would be scarce, stick to 500/550s here,or go 750,we will have to meet up for a ride, your too close not to.
