A local dealer would be willing to give a 15-20% off the on the new Lithium Iron (do not explode!) Shorai batteries. The discount rate depends on the numbers of batteries purchased. After my research, the Shorai seem to be the best of what is currently available. A friend bought one and the thing is amazing....very light weight, very strong case, quality terminals, and because the batteries are phisicaly smaller/much lighter you can go to a larger capacity one and still save *pounds* of weight! Self discharge rate is very very low, so charging once a year is about all you need if you are not using your bike...

the batteries are from Shorai, their website explains the technology/advantages/etc....

http://www.shoraipower.com/t-faq.aspx

we need a minimum of 10...

should I have posted in the "for sale" section? I can't seem to figure out how to move it.

I think the list prices are on the shoraipower.com website, and the 15-20% off of that depending on how many want to buy.

Too bad any battery is not cheap, be it old lead-acid or those. That's why most of my bikes don't have batteries :) I only ride them once a year if that, so i just try to swap the batteries around. Because these are smaller, I am hoping to get away with just buying a couple that would fit all my applications.

From their website it looks like the prices are not all that much more than the best of the lead acid stuff from Yuasa, some may even be about the same....like the YTZ line.

I would be in. Would the discount apply to our battery of choice, or would we be required to order a specific size?

I'll take two, maybe three depending on price, since that's how many bikes I have.

The discount would apply to any battery you choose, and it looks like we are almost there as far as the number of batteries go.

I will talk to the shop today regarding the details, and post back.

I have talked to the owner of the shop today and he agreed to to give the perpetual discount of 15% to sohc4.net members....that simplifies the logistics for me....  I don't have to coordinate a group buy, yet I have my batteries at discount :)

their contact info is:

Santa Clara Cycle Salvage

701 Kings Row UNIT 39B

ask for Corpus, and mention the sohc4.net discount of %15

OK, nice. Any of the ones over 120amp will run the starter. Anybody using these already want to post some feedback on them?

Sounds good for warm weather bikes but I wouldn't use them when cold out. Cold performance is not that great. But if they work good in bikes for people, I might just pick one up for my 250.

Before I bough one, I Goggled a bunch, and it seems that people have used those batteries in colder weather without problems. Not sure how low of a temp I would want to ride in, but I suppose if you want to ride in real cold weather, you could leave the headlight on for a few, before trying to start. Shorai has that in the FAQ on their website, they say that it helps to warm up the battery....but I think this is for really cold weather....not motorcycle weather.

I was thinking cold as in snowmobiles. They use the same batteries as motorcycles as you know, or 4 wheelers which are used a lot in winter too.
I suppose crazy people might ride Urals in the winter!

Somesuch,

Just found this through the newer thread on the tech forum. Very nice of you to make this connection for us all.

Any feedback yet.  I'll do my own research too, but a lightweight battery would be key for me since I need to bring it inside to charge it.

I do ride in cold weather (mid 20's was probably the worst of it),  but I could always keep my old one for those moments.

Thanks for the good work!

I think the place was happy with the turn out...they were sold out of most of the sizes. I am waiting to for the next batch to get my second one. As far as feedback on the batteries, it is to early to comment on durability, but performance is better than lead acid, bike cranks faster (probably due to lower V drop across the battery due to lower internal impedance), the weight as mentioned is much lower, so in applications where the battery tray mounting is of questionable strength there are less/no problems (my Husky TE610E), etc. I really hope the longevity is as promised by Shorai.

Sounds pretty darn great. I saw on the actual shorai site they were out of stock. Any indication how long this might take?

Also, have you stopped using a tender completely?  The info on the site was very interesting.
